Day 2 of the Virtual Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race is now in full swing & overnight we had some big changes in the fleet -- JOLLY DOLPHIN racing for Magothy River Association continues to lead the fleet & now VIRGINIA of Nauticus has taken second place. Tugantine Norfolk Rebel & Schooner Adventurer are right in her wake with the rest of the fleet in hot pursuit.

Lets take a closer look at some of the fleet! JOLLY DOLPHIN (middle in the photo) is modeled after early oyster dredgers. She's a work-boat yacht, she carries a sort of "Bugeye rig" featuring a jib, foresail & mainsail, these boats are referred to as "three sail bateaux" or "two-masted skipjacks".

JOLLY DOLPHIN was built for recreational use by James B. Richardson on LeCompte Creek, Maryland in 1958. After half a dozen owners, and being neglected ashore, owner Captain Jack Zuraw restored her with the help of the Richardson Maritime Museum from 2007 to 2010. Privately owned & maintained JOLLY DOLPHIN has provided traditional sailing experiences for community outreach, education & conservation efforts on the Magothy River. Over the years passengers have including middle school & high school STEM students, conservationists & Maryland history enthusiasts. She is currently berthed on the Magothy River.

Seaport is raising funds from now until August 15th through the GCBSR Virtual Race Fundraiser to help cover the costs for up to 10 current and graduate Apprentices to sail aboard the Denis Sullivan in GCBSR's on-the-water race in October. And they're off! The 2026 Virtual Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race is on. Our fleet of vessels is now racing to raise funds for their nonprofit or cause that aligns with the mission of the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race.

Hey Seaport Folks! Help us fund our Apprentices' adventures in The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race! GET READY to donate to S/V Denis Sullivan starting on Wednesday.

It's Virtual Race Week! From noon Wednesday August 12 until 3 PM on Saturday, August 15, competing vessels will "race" to raise the most support for their cause. The boat that raises the most money wins!

Since 2020 the Virtual GCBSR has raised over $300,000 for nonprofit organizations around the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Join us for Sails on the Potomac this weekend!

Visit us at the McIlhenny Seaport Center, June 12th - 14th, 12pm - 6pm:

Washington Ship Model Society (WSMS): Head to our workshop’s second floor to see a display of ship models from this local group of model builders and collectors. You’ll see ships of all eras, including a three-foot model of USS O-9 (SS-70), an American submarine from the 1930s; and CSS SHILOH, a scratch-built, fictional 1890s Mississippi River gunboat. WSMS builds with wood, plastic, resin, paper – and even Legos!

The Longship Company: Learn more about ancient seafaring legacies and boatbuilding from volunteers with this educational nonprofit located in Accokeek, Maryland. They will have a 21ft Gyrfalcon — a reproduction of a Norwegian burial faering — stationed in our yard for active renovation work.

Seaport Center Tours: Learn more about our Apprentice Program and the woodworking, boatbuilding and sailing we teach while mentoring young adults. You'll see woodworking projects built by our very own Apprentices on the first floor, with some items for sale.

Viking Lawn Games: Head outside the shop for a round of Kubb, a traditional Nordic game of strategy and skill.
