Since 2008, the Les Whitt Memorial Scholarship has helped support the next generation of animal care professionals across Latin America.

Created in memory of Robert Leslie “Les” Whitt, former director of the Alexandria Zoological Park, this scholarship honors his legacy by promoting advanced training in animal husbandry and behavioral enrichment. Each year, FOTAZ provides funding for the award, giving recipients the opportunity to participate in professional training through the Association of Zoos & Aquariums.

Scholarship recipients have represented zoological institutions and related facilities in Chile, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, Argentina, and Bolivia—bringing new skills, knowledge, and ideas back to their home institutions to benefit the animals in their care.

We are proud to help carry Les Whitt’s legacy forward through education, collaboration, and a shared commitment to wildlife care and conservation. 💙🌎

Early learning starts with curiosity—and sometimes, a stroller ride through the Zoo. 🐾

Stroller Safari at Alexandria Zoological Park gives children ages birth to 5 and their caregivers a fun, engaging way to explore wildlife together. Each monthly program features a new theme with story time, a craft, nature play, and a guided habitat visit with zoo residents.

Programs like Stroller Safari help spark a love for animals and nature from the very beginning. Through memberships, donations, events, and community support, Friends of the Alexandria Zoo helps support education programs that connect learners of all ages to wildlife and conservation.

One of Alexandria Zoological Park's keepers recently attended the 2026 Felid TAG Conference, connecting with other animal care professionals and learning more about the latest practices in felid husbandry, welfare, conservation, and management.

Opportunities like this help our keeper team bring valuable knowledge back to Alexandria Zoo—supporting the animals in their care and strengthening the Zoo’s role in conservation.

Continuing education conferences like this are made possible through support from Friends of the Alexandria Zoo. Every membership, donation, program, and event helps FOTAZ invest in the people who care for the animals you love.

A big thank you to the Louisiana FFA students from Ponchatoula High School and Loranger High School who spent part of their Day of Service volunteering at Alexandria Zoological Park!

While in Alexandria for the annual Louisiana FFA State Convention, these students rolled up their sleeves and helped clean a pond in Louisiana Habitat. Their hard work made a real difference for the Zoo, our staff, and the animals who call this area home.

We are grateful for their time, teamwork, and commitment to serving the community. Thank you for choosing to give back during your visit to Alexandria! 💙🌿

Reminder: Alexandria Zoological Park switches to summer hours beginning Monday, June 1.

☀️ Summer hours begin next week!

Starting Monday, June 1 through Sunday, August 30, Alexandria Zoo will open earlier so you can enjoy your Zoo day before the afternoon heat rolls in.

Come early for a morning walk, visit your favorite animals, and be back in the cool by lunch—or naptime!
