Every FCS professional has a unique story. Through our Faces of FCS series, we're honored to share the journeys of those advancing our field and strengthening lives.

This week, we're proud to feature Dr. Matthew Thornton, the head of the School of Human Ecology at Louisiana Tech University. Dr. Thornton has dedicated his career to supporting children, families, and communities through both nonprofit leadership and higher education.

Driven by a belief that families and communities are powerful agents of change, Dr. Thornton is committed to creating opportunities where research, teaching, and community engagement come together to make an impact. His leadership reflects the values at the heart of Family and Consumer Sciences: strengthening individuals, families, and communities through education, service, and lifelong learning.

It’s time for another round of FCS Face Off, where we put essential Family & Consumer Sciences questions to the test with members and friends.

Today’s matchup: Story Time or Craft Time?

Both support child development and spark learning in meaningful ways. As you reflect on your experiences with children, which one tends to create the most memorable moments of growth?

Cast your vote in the comments and share why. Remember; there are no wrong answers, just great conversations about better living through FCS.

Early childhood educators rely on research from Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS) to understand how children grow, learn, and thrive.
FCS helps teachers:
• Support social–emotional development
• Create safe learning environments
• Build strong relationships with families
• Understand how nutrition, routines, and home life affect learning

Healthy children start with informed adults.
