Americans Helping Americans, located in Alexandria, VA, serves our American communities affected by hunger, limited education and resources, and substandard housing. Thanks to our volunteers and donors, Americans Helping Americans provides services and needs for underprivileged communities. Our programs include Basic Needs, Veterans Support, Youth Programs, Wellness, Home Rehabilitation, Teachers

Grants, and Educational/Vocational Training. Our Mission is to join communities, build and strengthen neighbor relations, and work side by side with residents to address community-wide concerns linking them to the resources supportive of a healthy, safe and economically vibrant standard of living.

🎒 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸-𝘁𝗼-𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴—𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁.

This year, the cost of school supplies continues to climb. 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝟮𝟬%, while essentials like pencils, binders, and crayons have also increased in price. 𝗡𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗳 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 expect to take on debt just to cover back-to-school shopping.

Behind those numbers is a parent trying to stretch every dollar. A grandparent raising grandchildren on a fixed income. A family wondering how they'll afford everything on the school supply list.

That's why Americans Helping Americans® partners with local organizations across Appalachia to provide backpacks filled with the supplies students need to start the school year ready to learn.

💛 Ask anyone at Appalachian Ministries of the Smokies Events & Updates (AMOS) why they do this work, and the answer always comes back to one thing: their neighbors.

🍎 For many kids, summer doesn't just mean a break from school—it also means a break from school meals.

That's why Americans Helping Americans® partners with organizations like Ministries of the Smokies Events & Updates (AMOS) to help fill the gap.

Their Lunch Box program delivers meals directly into neighborhoods, making sure children have food at home even when transportation or other barriers make it difficult for families to reach meal sites. It's currently the only program in Jefferson City delivering summer meals directly to children.

This summer, the program expects to serve 100 children from 50 households each week throughout the eight-week program.

For more than 40 years, AMOS has been helping families across East Tennessee with home repairs, emergency shelter, food assistance, job readiness, and so much more.

Together with Americans Helping Americans®, they're making sure families have safe homes, children have meals during the summer, and parents have the support they need to build a more stable future.

🌺✈️ No passports required. We took a trip to Hawaii... Without Leaving West Virginia!

This summer, volunteers from Sidwell Friends School transformed McDowell County FSC., BCPIA's community center into a flight to Hawaii for local children!

The kids received boarding passes, met their "pilots" and "flight attendants," watched their plane "take off," enjoyed in-flight snacks, and even received traditional Hawaiian leis and traditional Hawaiian food after landing.

One Sidwell volunteer summed up the week perfectly:
"I definitely think it was worth it... I definitely want to come back." 💙

Moments like these help children build confidence, friendships, and memories they'll never forget.

🏡 For three years, Jerry and his wife lived with very little electricity.
They carefully plugged in different appliances at different times just to have lights and a little heat. Their refrigerator couldn't run, so they relied on coolers filled with ice to keep food cold.

But the good news is: BCPIA learned about their situation, and they immediately stepped in to help. 🛠️

While repairs to their electrical system continue, volunteers from Sidwell Friends School spent the week replacing siding on their home and helping tackle long-overdue repairs.

Jerry shared how grateful they were to finally see the work being done and how much they were looking forward to having their steps repaired.

Sometimes, a helping hand means more than fixing a house—it reminds a family they aren't facing life's challenges alone. ❤️💙

Last year, together, we helped deliver 18,648 food boxes to families across Appalachia. 📦❤️

Right now, we're focused on providing 2,500 food boxes by the end of this month—and we're not there yet.

Each food box helps provide enough food to feed a family of four for about a week.

When families receive a food box, they don't always see the work that happens behind the scenes to make it possible.

In this story, one of our partner organizations, Appalachian Ministries of the Smokies, shares how they answered the call when Americans Helping Americans needed help packing food boxes for distribution to communities across the country. It wasn't an easy task, but they made it happen because they believed in the mission and the impact these food boxes have on families facing hardship.
