Can you believe this started as a neighborhood food drive in Alexandria VA 👀🙏

Since 2020, Be The Good has been 100% volunteer-run and operated. Here’s all of the GOOD you did in 2025 — with more taking place every week in 2026!

🌟 5,600 BOOST BAGS 🌟 This was a new program we piloted in the spring of 2025, and WOW did our volunteers show up. Little did we know there would be a government shutdown in the fall, which made these discreet packs of food even more imperative for families facing temporary hardships. Couple that with anecdotal reports from our partners that many families felt nervous attending large food distribution events… God knew we needed to have a compact option for children to take home in backpacks for long breaks and emergencies.

🌟 $30,000 GROCERY GIFT CARDS 🌟 750 families received $40 grocery gift cards for winter break to help them provide their children with food. With food prices on the rise, $40 doesn’t go far, but it was a blessing to distribute these and give families the option to purchase fresh foods.

🌟 780 LITTLE FREE FOOD PANTRY FILL-UPS 🌟 Every weekend, volunteers stopped by almost two dozen Little Free Food Pantries with non-perishable food, providing emergency resources for our neighbors experiencing food insecurity. Some volunteers chose the same location week after week, learning just how quickly the food was distributed.

🌟 23,000 SANDWICHES 🌟 In 2025, we started a new partnership with a local homeless shelter, and you continued the incredible work to make thousands and thousands of sandwiches for our neighbors who are unhoused.

🌟 29 LOCAL SCHOOLS 🌟 Though our Little Free Food Pantries and Boost Bags, we had the honor of partnering with 29 local schools in Fairfax County and Alexandria City in 2025.

🌟 THOUSANDS OF VOLUNTEERS 🌟 You organized! Neighbors, scout troops, high school clubs, school communities, co-workers, teams, churches, youth groups… you came together to do GOOD in our community together!

We count every volunteer, donation, partner, and recipient a blessing from the Lord. We are honored to be part of this movement and we are in awe of the GOOD you spread across the DMV in 2025! 🤟

We need your help! ❄️ If you’re in NOVA and willing to sign-up to fill a Little Free Food Pantry before the snow arrives on Sunday, there will definitely be an increased need!

Winter weather + several preplanned school closures + end of the month (i.e. tighter budgets) could be really difficult for area families this weekend.

🤔 “If you don’t mind me asking, how do you collect all of this food?”

👆 That was the question we received from a wonderful school partner as we loaded up 150 Boost Bags that will go to the students at her Title 1 elementary school.

❤️ The answer? Be The Good is able to give away +2,500 bags of food this season thanks to the radical generosity of our volunteers, which has been miraculously multiplied beyond our dreams to impact thousands of families across our community.

🤟 Every Boost Bag you pack, sandwich you make, or Little Free Food Pantry you stock is a tangible outpouring of generosity and love. Thank you, always, for being the good.

No student should ever feel ashamed of being hungry. 😕 One of our amazing partners recently shared that — despite significant need in their school community — many families and students felt too embarrassed to pick up a food donation.

Thanks to YOUR generosity, we were able to quickly pivot to help. Now, 250 of your Boost Bags are tucked into discreet, opaque sleeves, giving recipients the privacy they deserve and helping the school distribute even more food ahead of the holidays. ❤️🤟

What does a miracle look like? 👀

For five years, we’ve had the honor of witnessing a miracle unfold week after week as thousands of students, families, co-workers, neighbors, teammates, churches, scout troops, club members, and other volunteers have made and donated +140,000 sandwiches for our neighbors who are experiencing hunger and homelessness.

Whether you’ve filled a Little Free Food Pantry with non-perishable food or loaded 25 sandwiches into ziplock bags, your generosity matters. You are part of a movement of miracles in action in our community. 🥫🥪

Special thanks to the young people at for making us part of your “Mission Camp” this week! 🤟

2024 Holiday Care Package deliveries are officially underway! This is our 5th year delivering these big bags and boxes of food, which are then distributed to local families through schools and non-profit partners. This effort takes hundreds of incredible volunteers and supporters, which is truly a miracle to witness! Thank you to everyone who donates their time and resources to make Be The Good a reality 🤟

What is a Little Free Food Pantry? 🤨 These boxes look like neighborhood libraries, but are filled with unexpired non-perishable food instead of books.

We rely on incredible volunteers to visit more than two dozen Little Free Food Pantries across the DMV each week. Since March 2021, hundreds of volunteers have signed up to check the little boxes and fill them with shelf-stable pantry items like peanut butter, pasta, and cereal.

The goal of this program is to provide flexible, emergency non-perishable food for local families — all with discretion and dignity. Each pantry has a simple message: “take what you need, leave what you can.”

Each pantry unit is placed outside and holds two to three bags of groceries when empty. Volunteers by on their own schedules and can pick up food from us in Alexandria, Va. or bring their own donations.

We know a little box won’t solve the food insecurity in our region, but every donation helps. We also hope this one of the easiest ways volunteers can make a direct impact on our community.

Thank you Supervisor Dan Storck for nominating Be The Good for this year’s Mount Vernon District Volunteer Fairfax awards! 🤟

We are amazed but the miracles we’ve witnessed in less than three years and we are honored to be a part of and serve this region alongside leaders like Supervisor Storck, Supervisor Rodney Lusk and the entire Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. Thank you for partnering with us and spreading the good!

In 2020, Amber and Sterling Marchand started a small food drive in the Mount Vernon District to teach their young children how to serve neighbors during the pandemic. The overwhelming outpouring of support and generosity from the community inspired the Marchands to create the Be The Good Project, a....
