Tornado season is here and it's crucial to be ready for severe weather events like tornadoes, floods, strong winds, and hail. Here’s a checklist to ensure your household is ready:
✅Emergency Kit:
- Flashlights (with extra batteries)
- First aid kit
- Portable phone charger
- Non-perishable food and water (enough for 72 hours)
- Whistle (to signal for help)
- Multi-tool or Swiss Army knife
✅Safety Gear:
- Helmets (to protect your head from debris)
- Sturdy shoes (in case you need to walk through debris)
- Rain gear (to stay dry during storms)
✅Important Documents:
- Copies of important documents (ID, insurance, medical records)
- Contact information for family and friends
✅Plan Ahead:
- Identify your safe space in your home (basement, storm cellar, or interior room)
- Create a family emergency communication plan
✅Stay Informed:
- Sign up for weather alerts

Here are a few things to include in your safety kit, also called an emergency kit.

In addition to the items on the screen, include any baby items (formula, diapers, etc), pet items (food, medicines), and blankets and/or pillows.

Wear shoes to your safe place, and everyone needs a helmet.

Take pictures of you and your pets in one photo, and put your contact info on your kid's clothes/bracelet in case anyone gets separated.

In the case of power outages or cell disruptions, you can change your voicemail to leave a message to friends and family.

Severe weather will impact our area in two waves this weekend. Both should be taken seriously. Saturday's system has been upgraded to a level 5 in portions of the state. The City of Alexander City's Municipal Complex will be open as a storm shelter from 9:00 p.m. Friday (3/14) to 8:00 a.m. Sunday (3/16).

The National Weather Service is forecasting the possibility of strong, long-track tornadoes in the overnight hours on Saturday afternoon, evening, and into the early morning hours of Sunday.

PLEASE SHARE: The 𝙏𝘼𝙇𝙇𝘼𝙋𝙊𝙊𝙎𝘼 𝘾𝙊𝙐𝙉𝙏𝙔, FEMA operated Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) will open Friday, February 10, 2023 at 1:00 PM CST. Regular hours will be Monday to Saturday from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Closed on Sundays. It will be in the Betty Carol Graham Technology Center in room 202 at Central Alabama Community College. The purpose of the DRC is to give storm survivors an opportunity to sit down face to face with a FEMA representative and others to discuss questions about their application. No appointment is necessary to visit the Disaster Recovery Center.

Survivors may also apply for assistance by going online to DisasterAssistance.gov, using the FEMA app for smartphones or calling 800-621-3362. The helpline is open, and help is available from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Central Time in most languages. If you use a relay service, such as video relay (VRS), captioned telephone or other service, give FEMA your number for that service.
