Today we Mongolians are celebrating Mongolian Lunar year Eve (Bituun) in Mongolia is a day of deep cleaning, debt settlement, and family feasts, marking the end of the old year and the anticipation of a prosperous new year. Families gather for a large dinner of buuz (dumplings) and uuts (sheep) to ensure abundance.
Key Traditions of Bituun (Lunar New Year's Eve):

Cleaning and Purifying: Homes and barns are thoroughly cleaned to remove old, negative energy, preparing for the new, fresh energy of the coming year.

Settling Debts: It is a time to pay off debts, return borrowed items, and resolve arguments to avoid bringing negativity into the new year.

The Bituun Feast: A large, mandatory family dinner is held where everyone eats until completely full to symbolize a prosperous, abundant year ahead.

Rituals: A traditional offering of food, including uuts (sheep), is arranged, and candles are lit to symbolize enlightenment.

Placement of Ice: Some families place ice at the doorway for the horse of the deity Palden Lhamo, who is believed to visit every household.

Bituun is a time to stay home with family, and it is considered bad luck to wander between houses, ensuring that everyone stays together for the celebration.

Why Women Diplomats Matter

Women in diplomacy are frequently given "soft" portfolios—areas such as human rights,
education, and aid—but this is exactly where disruptions due to faith are more likely to
occur. Women bring skills they possess that men may not prioritise, including deep listening,
community trust, and knowledge in navigating faith spaces without signalling allegiance to
one faith or position.

What they bring:
• Trust-building with women of faith who are repeatedly sidelined in diplomatic spaces.
• Networking led by empathy that bridges diaspora NGOs, child protection services, and
embassy resources.
• The courage to name gender harms, even when it is uncomfortable to use the lexicon of
religious freedom.
