We had several teams cover three sites today in search of turtles (and scouted a fourth site for when they’re ready for us). Big thanks again to for granting us permission to their sites!

No fooling here, we're giving you a chance to try being a turtle researcher! Eastern Box turtles are a beloved native species; unfortunately they're at risk of declining due to habitat loss, vehicle collisions, and poaching. We're trying to discover the most turtle-friendly land management practices as part of our long-term research project with the Turtle Conservation Ecology Lab and Joe Kolowski at the Smithsonian’s NZCBI.

We found our first box turtle today - they are out and about! Please keep an eye out for turtles. If you see one crossing the road, remember to help it in the direction in which it's traveling!

As part of a new housing project in Front Royal, we received a call from Rappahannock Development Group to ask if we'd help sweep the site for turtles. Despite it being the last day of February, twelve people came out on Saturday afternoon to search. Unfortunately, we were not successful in finding any herps but we look forward to trying again when turtles come out of brumation. :)
Thank you to this developer for at least trying to save the critters that will be impacted by this new housing development!

The national home builder sent their team out again today and found four more! 🙂 Great news for these 4 turtles. I hope they make it through the winter and delight someone in that neighborhood in the future. 🐢

Found one! Surprising because it’s so dry out. A cute, yellow juvenile. Left it in some water and I hope it finds a place to bed down for the colder temps (sad his forested home is gone).

I met with a national home builder on Monday at their site in Aldie, and though they cannot grant us access to their sites, they consulted with me for when and what to look for. Their team will be going out weekly, while the weather is good, to walk the perimeter of this project.
Lo and behold, they found their first turtle today! I’m so thankful they are receptive and willing to take the time to look for turtles! ❤️
