Alden Historical Society

Alden Historical Society The Society was organized on April 21, 1965 by a small group of interested citizens who felt the nee Aidan’s Episcopal Church on Main Street.

In November of 1966, Walden Roberts purchased his late uncle’s home in the village and donated it to the Town of Alden to be used by the Historical Society. The home was donated in memory of his wife, Frances Young Roberts, a charter member of the Society. The group was able to hold its first meeting in the building in February 1967. In 1971, a historical marker was placed at the site of the Origi

nal Black Water Baths, now St. In 1975, another marker was placed marking the site of Moffat’s Tannery, an early Alden business. This site is now occupied by the Rite Aid Drug Store on Broadway. In recent years, additional markers noting the Town Line hamlet’s Civil war secession from the Union, the Presbyterian Church as first church established in Alden and Moses Fenno as the first non-native settler, have been placed. Over the years the collection of artifacts continued to grow and more display space and a meeting space were badly needed. These needs were met in 1996 with the construction of a 1000 square foot addition at the rear of the original house. The addition was named the “Ruth Davis Room” in 2006 recognizing Mrs. Davis’s nearly twenty years of service as the Society’s curator.

To commemorate the America 250 celebration, the Alden Historical Society recently placed “Betsy Ross” flags at the grave sites of nine Revolutionary War veterans whose final resting places are in Alden cemeteries. At Alden Evergreen Cemetery, flags were placed to honor Timothy Baylies, James Cheesborough (Chesebrough) III, Nehemiah Estabrook (not pictured), Capt. Joshua Hendee, Matthrew Lindsley, Ebenezer “Ebba” Peck, and Darius Waterman. At Alden Town Cemetery (Sandridge Rd), flags were placed to honor William Snow and Oliver Standart. We will be telling the stories of these veterans who settled in Alden after the War in future posts.

For those who haven’t heard, the famed Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 steam locomotive will be passing though Alden as part of its coast-to-coast tour to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary. After a stopover in Buffalo on June 10, the train is scheduled to depart the Bison Rail Yard at 9 am on June 11th. It should be passing through Alden on its way to Silver Springs sometime between 9:15 and 9:30 am, crossing Townline, Two Rod, Exchange, Sullivan and County Line Roads. The last time a historic steam locomotive passed through was the “765” Nickel Plate from the Fort Wayne Railroad Museum in 2015. (map courtesy of Google)
