The Food Science class learned about interfering with crystal formation by making fudge. Even without the taste test, the students have some definite opinions as to which liquid (whole milk, low fat milk, half and half or cream) will produce the creamiest candy.

The Riverland Truck Driving program stopped at school today to talk with the Careers 9 students about careers in the transportation industry. I was expecting a couple trucks - they showed up with an entire fleet. Students got to meet with the instructor, current students of the program and drivers from some of the industry partners. Of course honking the horns was everyone’s favorite.

The Food Science class toured Hormel Research & Development this morning to learn about how food products are created and tested. They also learned about career opportunities in the food industry. The next stop was Riverland Community College where the food science instructor Sue Gorman shared information about the program. Then students were able to do a lab to see how changing the fat in chocolate chip cookies affects appearance, taste and texture.
