Good morning folks,
I know it is not fall, but it kinda feels like fall, today and the last few days. And we might have enjoyed some of the cooler days if we hadn't been amidst of so much wet falling from the sky! Puddles in the grass everywhere! Even places I didn't think were that low lying. My pumpkins are swimming again for the third time this year and I never knew that tomatoes were such princesses!! They do not like wearing wet feet! My Mother- law , Kathleen Lamphere , used to get discouraged this time of year and will her whole garden to die, and I never understood her wishes, as I cherished every morsel I could squeeze out of my garden, even covering many veggies up in case of frost! Well, I was younger then, and it is discouraging to receive so much rain! We have had about 2.35 inches of rain in the last week! and over an inch of that was yesterday!
However, I had so many cucumbers I made Bread and Butter Pickles and Old Fashioned Tongue Pickles, and a little bit of relish!! I think I have rutabagas ( the real ones from the grocery store), Carrots look yummy, First time ever growing Fennel and it looks great! Peppers are astounding, green and red bell, jalapenos (Stuffed Jalapenos are delicious! and cayenne(Sweet Chili Thai Sauce is sweet and a little spicy and great with chicken). Celery looks green and strong, and I was drowning in green and yellow beans in early summer!! Sometimes, we have to catch ourselves from being a little negative, take a breath and look at the brighter side of life!
Another spot of brightness is our Annual Barbeque was a success and we made money so it was a good fundraiser! We had very little leftover and what was left has been saved for soups. And we always need soup for Bingo!!
Speaking of soup and Soup weather, The Annual Meeting with Election of Officers has been moved to September yearly. We want to catch members before they start traveling, as we all should have a say in voting for our leaders of Islands in the Sun Senior Center! If you would like to step up and run for an office, or you know someone who would like to run for an office, as you know all terms are for one year so all offices are open! Some of us are willing to continue to serve, but it doesn't mean we are the best for our position, as there are many of you that could be better and add new fresh ideas. By the way, ideas are always welcome from all members. The nomination Committee is Charlene Urwin 512-507-8295, Edith Plouffe 401-595-6134 and Marie Sturgeon 801-370-6205. Please call them with any suggestions for officer positions. Now, back to the soup! September 5, 2024 is our Annual Meeting starting with a free Soup and Sandwich Supper at 6pm. The Annual Meeting with election of Officers will begin at 7pm. According to the Bylaws, the new Officers will begin their Officer duties for the October meeting.
Charlene asked me to write a letter to you announcing the officer candidate positions, and I thought I had very little to say. I was wrong again!
Well, I have a little more computer business to attend to, then I am going to play in some mud in my garden and try to harvest a few veggies. Hopefully I won't sink!
Wearing full boots in the garden today,
Willie Burbank
