Do you know a 4th grader who’d love to learn to play the violin, viola, or cello? Our Elementary String Project Level 1 class begins on Monday, September 21! We’ll provide an instrument - thank you, Robertson & Sons Violin Shop! - music book, a fancy pencil, and even a cool t-shirt! Students just need to bring a smile, curiosity, and a desire to learn! AYSP families - how are the luminaria bag-folding festivities going? Just a friendly reminder that you can get friends and family members in on the fun - we don’t mind! And apparently, you can help even if you don’t have opposable thumbs! You still have plenty of time to get those bags folded - but don’t procrastinate! It’s gonna be an epic luminaria year - luminaries go on sale October 1!

Do you know a fourth grader who wants to learn to play the violin, viola, or cello? We're now taking new students for our Elementary String Project Level 1 class! No prior instrumental music instruction is required - we'll take care of all the basics! What's more, you don't even need an instrument. All instruments used in class are generously loaned to AYSP by Robertson & Sons Violin Shop. Please share this information with any families you know who might have a budding musician in their midst. Classes start September 21.

We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Nick Handley, a talented and popular entertainer and also a proud alumnus of AYSP. Nick participated in several AYSP reunions, performing (he couldn’t help himself) with the giant alumni orchestra onstage at Popejoy Hall, so that is how we’ll remember him. We’ll miss you, Nick!

What a great day, as we welcomed our 2026-2027 Junior Symphony, Junior Orchestra and Junior String Orchestra students to the AYSP building to start a new year of learning and music making! Lots of music, laughter, food and silliness, and we can’t wait to watch these students develop individually as musicians and collectively as part of an ensemble! We also had the privilege of meeting and getting to know some of the greatest PARENTS in the community - it’s going to be a great year!

It’s all fun and games until someone has to eat a plate of spaghetti with a pastry brush. Yep, the Youth Concert Orchestra’s epic One-Utensil Dinner 2026 is in the books, along with a terrific first rehearsal and the kickoff for another great year of music-making! Thank you, students, for being such great sports about dinner and for being such awesome humans in general. We’re excited to see what this year brings for this hard-working ensemble!
