Some cancer treatments can’t continue without blood on the shelf.

During chemotherapy, Amy’s platelet levels dropped so low she had to pause treatment for a transfusion. By the end, she was so anemic she could barely get through the day while preparing for surgery and radiation.

A whole blood transfusion helped restore her strength so she could move forward with surgery, care for her children, and return to work sooner than expected.

Today, Amy is a three year survivor of HER2-positive breast cancer.
Behind so many survivorship stories is someone who took an hour to donate blood.

Help empower survivors and the patients still fighting by scheduling your donation at vitalant.org

One person can change what an entire generation believes about helping others.

After 23 years as a Registered Nurse, Kristi knows exactly how quickly blood can become the difference between fear and hope for a patient and their family. Now, as a Health Science teacher and blood drive coordinator, she’s bringing that perspective into the classroom.

Her students are learning more than healthcare fundamentals. They’re learning what it means to step up for people they may never meet.

Some are donating blood at just 16 years old. Some are seeing firsthand that saving lives is not reserved for doctors or nurses. It starts with showing up.

Every blood drive Kristi organizes creates another opportunity for students to lead with compassion, courage, and community care. Want to create that kind of impact where you work, teach, or gather? Host a blood drive: vitalant.org/BloodDrive

Pride Month is about showing up for each other. Blood donation is too.

Patients who need blood come from every background, identity, and walk of life. Building a strong blood supply for the patients who rely upon it means creating a donation experience where more people feel welcomed, respected, and encouraged to step forward.

Updated donor eligibility guidance now uses individual risk assessments regardless of gender or sexual orientation, allowing more people to save lives while maintaining the safety of the blood supply.

Only about 3% of eligible people donate blood. More donors can mean more lives supported when patients need it most.

One blood type gets called first when seconds matter.

Terry donates Type O blood, and in emergencies, that can make all the difference.

When there isn’t time to determine a patient’s blood type, hospitals often rely on Type O blood to help trauma patients, accident victims, and others in critical situations. That’s why Type O is consistently in high demand and why keeping a steady supply matters every day.

If you’re Type O, your donation plays a unique role in helping hospitals stay ready. And if you’re not Type O, patients still depend on you. Every blood type has a purpose and every donation helps keep care moving.
