🌏 Through the Cultural Arts Centre at Tumaini University Makumira, the Stubbs family also demonstrates positive ecumenical and inter-religious relations. Music opens doors that might otherwise stay closed, building bridges with people of other Christian traditions and other faiths.

🌏 Ministry in Tanzania also means practical training in sound systems, stage lighting, and recording production. Randall trains students and church workers to improve the technical side of worship services, concerts, and other church events.

When the sound works and the message can be heard clearly, more people can receive the Gospel. It may not seem like traditional mission work, but it serves the church in a very real way.

🌏 In 2022, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania released a new hymnal. Now the Stubbs family and their team are working to record all 515 songs in that hymnal.

Why? Many church musicians in Tanzania do not read music notation. Having a recording of every hymn means congregations anywhere in the country can learn and sing the songs of the church, even without a trained musician on hand. It is a resource that will serve the church for many years.

🌏 Not everyone can qualify for or afford formal university studies. That is why Randall and Faith also lead practical music workshops for pastors, evangelists, and church musicians who serve in local congregations.

These workshops bring hands-on training directly to the people leading worship every Sunday in villages and towns across Tanzania. It is a simple way to make a big difference in how the church sings and proclaims the Gospel.

🌏 The Stubbs family describes their work as "capacity building." Rather than leading worship themselves, they multiply music leaders, choir directors, and musical resources so that Tanzanian believers can lead the church's worship for generations to come.

With more than 1,100 ELCT congregations spread across the country, the need for trained church musicians is enormous. Every graduate of the program goes on to serve and train others in their own communities.

🌏 There is a Swahili proverb the Stubbs family has taken to heart: "Pole pole ndio mwendo." It means "slowly, slowly is the way."

Mission work in Tanzania is not fast. It is built on years of showing up, learning the language, earning trust, and teaching one student at a time. Randall has served there for almost 20 years, and that kind of long, patient faithfulness is exactly what makes lasting ministry possible.

🌏 When the music program at Tumaini University Makumira began, it had 4 students, 2 borrowed classrooms, 1 textbook, 1 acoustic piano, and 2 trumpets. That was all.

Today the program has 63 students, 8 classrooms, a performance space, eating facilities, traditional houses, instrument exhibits, and a music library with 6,000 books. For 10 years it was the only music degree program in the entire country. As they say in Tanzania, Bwana asifiwe! Praise to God!

🌏 Why music? In Tanzania, singing is at the very heart of worship. Choirs, hymns, and church musicians carry the Gospel into hearts in a way that words alone cannot. That is why the Stubbs family's ministry is called Music for Evangelism.

By teaching formal music programs at the certificate, diploma, and bachelor levels, Randall and Faith are helping raise up a generation of music leaders who will lead worship and share Christ in congregations across the country.

🌏 We want to introduce you to Randall and Faith Stubbs, ALWM's missionaries to Tanzania, and their children Marissa and Bless. The Stubbs family first came to Tanzania in 2006 as volunteers to help start a music degree program at Tumaini University Makumira, the educational center of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania.

Nearly 20 years later, they are still there. Randall is fluent in Swahili, which gives him an effectiveness that is rare among career missionaries. ALWM is thankful to walk alongside these seasoned and fruitful servants.

🌏 Tanzania is home to about 61 million people in East Africa, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) is one of the largest Lutheran denominations in the world. More than 6 million Tanzanians, about 13% of the population, belong to the ELCT, worshiping in over 1,100 congregations.

This month we are focusing on ALWM's work in Tanzania, where missionaries Randall and Faith Stubbs serve the church through music, teaching, and training at Tumaini University Makumira in the northern part of the country.
