Healthy Here NM

Healthy Here NM An initiative of the Bernalillo County Community Health Equity Council
Healthy Eating | Active Living | Preventing Chronic Disease

We all want to be healthy but that can be hard if the right supports aren’t in place. For example, it can be hard to eat healthy when it’s too expensive to buy fresh and local fruits and vegetables, they’re not sold in your neighborhood, or they’re not offered in the schools. It can be hard to be physically active when places like streets, sidewalks, and parks aren’t easy, safe, and enjoyable to u

se. And it can be hard to manage a chronic disease, like diabetes, when you aren’t connected to a system that helps you do so. That’s why Healthy Here exists. We’re working to change systems and environments to make it easier for Hispanic, Latino, and Native American residents of the International District and South Valley to access healthy foods, be physically active, and manage chronic disease. We do this with the help of a large network of partners, all of which have years of experience and expertise working in communities. Collectively our impact is stronger than when we work alone. Healthy Here is an initiative of the Bernalillo County Community Health Council. It is funded through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s REACH (Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health) award and managed by Presbyterian Healthcare Services.

Access to fresh food supports health at every age 💚

Programs like this help reduce barriers by bringing locally grown produce directly to households, supporting seniors, caregivers, and families in our community.

If you know a household that may qualify, consider sharing this resource or helping them sign up.

Care is something we build over time 💚

It shows up in the everyday — in listening, consistency, and the spaces where people feel supported and connected.

Across our communities, this is sustained through partnerships, shared effort, and people who continue to show up.

This is what community care looks like in action.

Care looks like showing up 💚

Not just in big moments — but in the everyday ones.
Listening. Walking together. Noticing what works — and what needs to change.

Through efforts like the T4B Community Walk Audit along the Central Corridor, community members come together to share their experiences and help shape safer, more connected spaces.

This is how care shows up in our neighborhoods.

Parks and open spaces like Boca Negra Canyon play an important role in how we move, connect, and spend time outdoors.

Right now, community members have the opportunity to help shape the future of Boca Negra Canyon and the Lava Shadows area. Input is being gathered on how to improve access, visitor experience, and protect these spaces for generations to come.

During National Park Week (April 18–26), this is a great moment to reflect on how these places support our wellbeing — and to share what matters most to you.

Care grows over time 💚

In everyday moments — sharing food, trying something new, and building habits that last.
This week is Every Kid Healthy Week (April 20–24) — a reminder that the patterns children grow up with can shape their health over time.

When kids have access to nutritious food, safe spaces, and consistent support, those small moments turn into strong foundations.

We’re sharing what this looks like across our communities.
