New Mexico Political Report

New Mexico Political Report New Mexico's best and most comprehensive political reporting. Period. That means less reporting on the people and issues in politics affecting New Mexicans most.

Traditional news outlets are shrinking their newsroom staffs and, while government and social issues grow more complex, political and feature reporters are often the first to be let go. So we are doing something about it. We assembled some of New Mexico’s top political reporters to take an in-depth look at politics and how it impacts New Mexicans everyday. Launched in January 2015, NM Political R

It was a wild night at the ABQ City Council meeting... City Council ejects speakers in raucous debate, before approving new Albuquerque minimum wage

Burqueños workers making minimum wage have something to be excited about – if they have patience – after the Albuquerque City Council approved an icrease to the city’s minimum wage Monday night after a packed and at times raucous meeting that drew so many people that some were forced to watch from the lobby.

What happens when a sheriff ignores the law?

New Mexico's attorney general is suing two New Mexico sheriffs for violating HB9 - the law prohibiting local governments from assisting ICE.

He says those sheriffs allow their deputies to participate in federal 287(g) programs where local cops make federal immigration arrests.

He wants courts to force the sheriffs to stop. The Supreme Court declined to intervene when Torrez last used HB9 to interfere in county contracts to keep ICE detention centers open. Will the courts see this issue differently now that the law is in effect?

A Democratic Socialist is giving Senator Ben Ray Luján a challenge in the Dem. primary for U.S. Senate -- and he isn't holding back with his blunt assessment of what Luján gets wrong.
"Tuesday, June 2 is not just another election – it is the deadline for resistance, to get rid of one do-nothing ‘Democrat’ in particular. With early voting already underway, New Mexicans are now granted a rare tactical opening: the first semi-open election, giving Independents and Decline-to-State voters the legal right to vote in either major party’s primary...

"To back Luján is to endorse a vacuum of leadership that fuels local and global crime; to back me is to fight for a future where labor, taxation, climate, and healthcare are wrested from the predatory elite. Ben Ray Luján is doing nothing while the world burns—now is the moment to replace this passive instrument of the elite with a future senator who has the backbone to fight for what really needs to be done and who refuses to be silenced about all past and present atrocities." -- Matt Dodson

Days before the Primary Election, a judge tosses New Mexico's statewide Republican Party Chair Amy Barela out of office...

A District Court judge in Valencia County has ordered the state’s top Republican out of her position just days before the state’s party primary elections.

District Court Judge Cindy Mercer sided with plaintiffs that Barela’s position as a candidate for reelection in the Republican Party primary for Otero County Commissioner against Jonathan Emery violated party rules against officers taking sides in interparty races. Interestingly, the suit was brought by Republican gubernatorial candidate Duke Rodriguez, lieutenant governor candidate Aubrey Blair Dunn and Emery. Each has advanced criticisms of Barela’s leadership which gained new attention after the party failed to qualify candidates for statewide races at the party’s statewide convention in February.

Heinrich, Senate Dem leaders secure decision making funding for Trump’s $1B ballroom “unlikely”

An effort by New Mexico’s Senior U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich and a handful of other Senate Democrats have made it significantly harder for Republicans to include their proposed $1 billion appropriation for President Donald Trump’s White House ballroom in an upcoming budget reconciliation bil, according to a Sunday press release from Heinrich’s office.
