Eight New Mexico legislators have signed a letter urging Mayor Keller to veto O-26-61, the Better Neighborhoods Ordinance, expressing concerns about the future of neighborhood participation in Albuquerque.
We share their belief that residents deserve a meaningful voice in decisions affecting their communities. In fact, that's one of the reasons Strong Towns ABQ supports these reforms!
Neighborhood associations will continue to be recognized, and coalitions can still organize, educate residents, advocate, and participate in public hearings. The ordinance changes the special recognition and appeal privileges coalitions receive from the City, while introducing new expectations around transparency and accountability.
We appreciate the legislators' emphasis on making neighborhood organizations more representative, inclusive, and accessible.
O-26-61 is an important step toward those very goals!!
Strong neighborhoods need strong community participation, and that means making room for more voices, not just the ones we've traditionally heard from.
We hope Mayor Keller signs O-26-61 and helps Albuquerque move toward a more welcoming, accountable neighborhood system. 🏘️
