Over at YES Housing, Inc.’s Imperial Building, work on the rooftop community garden continues. James Landry of Mission ABQ explains that it’s been a difficult year for growing due to the intense heat but the garden continues to kick out a lot of good vegetables for the residents of Imperial. The dedication of resident volunteer, Ava, and Mission ABQ’s newest staff member, Faila, has been crucial and we are extremely thankful for all of their help!

We’re thrilled to celebrate another exciting milestone for YES Housing, Inc.’s Calle Cuarta community in Albuquerque’s North Valley!

As reported by Albuquerque Business First, Bernalillo County NM has approved plans to transform the currently vacant Southern Tire Mart property into a multigenerational community center with social services, recreation, and retail space.

This investment will help create more opportunities for connection, support, and belonging for residents and neighbors of all ages. Together, these plans bring Calle Cuarta one step closer to becoming a vibrant, welcoming hub that strengthens the entire 4th Street corridor.

The project would redevelop a former tire storage facility into a community center with entrepreneurial space. YES Housing is seeking additional funding to close a remaining gap.

Exciting momentum is building at Calle Cuarta!

The Albuquerque Journal recently shared the news that The Muse Studio will become Calle Cuarta’s first retail tenant. Led by Michelle Ramirez, the studio is expected to open in September and will offer local photographers and videographers a flexible, welcoming space to create, collaborate, and bring their ideas to life in the heart of the Fourth Street corridor.

This new creative hub is an exciting step forward for Calle Cuarta and the surrounding community. As the development continues to grow, it is bringing together affordable housing, healthy living, local business, and meaningful opportunities for artists and entrepreneurs.

We’re proud to see Calle Cuarta becoming a place where residents, neighbors, and creatives can connect, thrive, and contribute to the vibrancy of the corridor.

August is Wellness Month and we’re seeing this reflected in our Community Gardens. Over at Nuevo Atrisco, James Landry of Mission ABQ led the students from One of a Kind Kids and had them help harvest tomatoes, green chile, carrots, and kohlrabi. They added this to some onions and garlic that were done curing and were ready to go in the resident’s pantry. While digging around, the kids found some monster carrots that were missed last year and were still growing.

Over at YES Housing, Inc’s Calle Cuarta community, James Landry of Mission ABQ commented, “The garden is producing well, and in this heat, the shade is actually a benefit, keeping our plants out of the blazing sun.
We harvested some great looking beets, and the tomatoes and chili plants are just starting to provide some delicious food for our residents.
We augmented this harvest with some Armenian cucumbers and kohlrabi from Imperial and filled the community fridge with some delicious, organic, nutrient dense food.”

Thank you to James, as well as Mission ABQ, and their awesome interns.

Every time we get our hands dirty in the soil, we're doing more than just planting seeds — we're planting hope. Our community garden is a testament to resilience and optimism. With each sprout, we're reminded that no matter how uncertain today may seem, we're nurturing a brighter tomorrow together. Seeing our neighbors come together, sharing laughs and stories, and watching our gardens flourish fills us with gratitude and excitement for what the future holds. ☀️

From Devon Fite, his organization Lea County Support & Advocacy for Growth & Empowerment is the service provider for YES Housing, Inc.’s Hobbs properties :

“This year’s community garden taught us one of our most meaningful lessons yet: even in chaos, strength can thrive. Rather than planting in perfect rows, we embraced a more natural approach—mixing companion plants and allowing healthy competition throughout the garden. To our surprise, the garden flourished. The children noticed that the strongest plants adapted, supported one another, and produced an abundant harvest. They reminded us that life isn’t always orderly, but with resilience, adaptability, and the right relationships, growth is still possible—even in the midst of chaos.”

Thank you to Devon, Lea County SAGE, and all the residents that volunteer at our communities!

It’s harvest time over at YES Housing, Inc.’s Imperial Building. The rooftop community garden was quite abundant with 54 pounds of produce picked, processed, and made available to the residents of Imperial. We would like to thank James Landry of Mission ABQ as well as their two interns, Brennan and Falla, and our most faithful resident volunteer, Ava. They’ve been working hard all spring to set us up for a bountiful summer and fall.

At YES Housing, Inc.’s Nuevo Atrisco, James Landry of Mission ABQ collaborated with students from One of a Kind Kids on the community garden. James noted the students' impressive efforts this summer.

"A couple weeks ago we harvested Texas Candy Onions and let them cure in a cool, dark place," he shared. "This week it was time to start processing some of that harvest, getting it ready for the residents. We also are beginning to get some tomatoes, chili, and kohlrabi on a regular basis."

We extend our gratitude to Mr. Landry, Mission ABQ, the students from One of a Kind Kids, and our residents for their dedication in making the garden a success.
