Good Morning Friends! Golden Eagles standing guard on their territory. However, this nest is not active, but an alternate not selected this year. We think that the active nest is of similar size but located around the corner of this cliff face. An exciting day in Ranch Country, New Mexico.

It's field work season! That means early mornings along the bosque listening – that's right, listening – for endangered Southwestern Willow Flycatchers! Hawks Aloft staff PD St. Clair and Heather Rissi heard 10 Southwestern Willow Flycatchers (likely migrating through) during this particular morning over a week ago. The second survey period started June 1st, and we will continue into mid-July.

Look closely. The first picture was taken May 22 during a nesting survey near Rio Bravo and shows only a Cooper's Hawk tail sticking out as she clearly incubated eggs. The following photos were taken May 29th. You can see the female Cooper's Hawk sitting up in one and in the others you can see multiple white fluffy nestlings! Last year four Cooper's fledged from this very nest! Here's hoping the trend will continue! Stay tuned!

Good Morning Friends! How dry it is! But, one large pond remains at the Hawks Aloft, Inc. study site in Ranch Country, New Mexico. We found a pair of American Avocets and were surprised to quite accidentally discover eggs gathered into a little scrape. hoping for the best for their growing family. The pond holds plenty of little midges and other insects. The location is far from any road other than a two-track. We departed quickly so as to leave them in peace.

Good Morning Friends! My backyard-loving pair of Curve-billed Thrashers almost raised three young this season, but now only one youngster remains. They are great parents, but who knows what tragedy must have befallen the two missing youngsters. Life is indeed perilous for fledglings.

Stop that car! It’s a Loggerhead Shrike! Did you know that this species is one of the very few non-raptors that we record on our driving raptor surveys? This is because while the species is still considered fairly common in some areas in North America, it is in serious decline and has almost completely disappeared from the northeastern US. According to All About Birds, the species has declined 2.6% every year from 1966 to 2019 for a combined decline of nearly 75%! The decline is largely contributed to the increased use of chemical pesticides found in its prey base as well as habitat loss.

Good Morning Friends! Common Raven, ever the adaptable omnivore, manages to hang on despite the severe drought in McKinley County. This intrepid pair built this year's nest atop the ventilation fan in very close proximity to a lot of human activity. Here, Mama Raven tends to her two chicks nearing fledging age! In 2025, we monitored 13 active Common Raven nests, but now, in 2026, of the four that attempted nesting, only two remain active. It is a very tough year in Ranch Country.

Here is another example of a Loggerhead Shrike, aka, “butcherbird”, using the spikes on this mesquite tree to impale its meal. Another way to remember this bird is to remember “loggerhead” is a synonym for “blockhead”, referring to the species extra-large head.

Thank you Larry Rimer for these photos.
