From National Association of Forest Service Retirees-NAFSR

The National Association of Forest Service Retirees (NAFSR) is closely following the Administration’s proposed reorganization of the U.S. Forest Service.

We support efforts to improve how the agency delivers its mission—especially in the face of increasing wildfire risk, climate challenges, and workforce pressures. However, the scale and pace of the proposed changes raise serious concerns.

Proposals to relocate headquarters, eliminate regional offices, and consolidate research could result in:
• Loss of critical expertise
• Disruptions to ongoing work
• Weakened engagement with Congress and partners

At a time when our National Forests and Grasslands face unprecedented challenges, clarity and transparency are essential.

We believe the agency must:
• Support employees through this transition
• Maintain strong scientific and operational capacity
• Clearly define what success looks like—and how it will be measured

Our public lands depend on a fully staffed, well-supported agency.

NAFSR remains committed to supporting the Forest Service and encourages leadership to proceed thoughtfully, engage stakeholders, and learn from past reorganizations.
