The Association of Applied Paleontological Sciences was excited to see students from a college in North Carolina out at Badlands Scientific Expeditions’ private ranch in eastern New Mexico collecting phytosaur and amphibian fossils, gathering matrix for screenwashing, and learning about New Mexico’s incredible fossil record.

Experiences like this are an important reminder that academic and commercial paleontology do not exist in separate worlds. Collaboration between students, researchers, landowners, and professional paleontology companies create opportunities for education, discovery, and collection of scientifically important fossil material.

Private land plays a major role in paleontology, especially in areas where significant fossil resources occur outside of public lands. Partnerships like these help to provide students with hands on field experience while improving the fossil record.

The AAPS strongly supports professional collaboration, responsible fossil collection, and building strong connections between the academic and commercial paleontological communities. We are excited to see what future discoveries and research come from projects like this.

We'd love to hear about your recent collaborative paleontology efforts! Please send us an email or private message if you'd like to share! [email protected]

Historic Dorset, England institution Lyme Regis Museum urgently asks for help in bringing important Mary Anning paleontology letter home 💌

Beloved Local Dorset Institution Lyme Regis Museum Raising Funds to Bring Important Mary Anning Letter Home

[excerpt] "The Friends of Lyme Regis Museum are raising money to cover the purchase (including the auction fees) and display of a partial hand-written letter by pioneering palaeontologist
Mary Anning. This letter has come up for auction and will be sold on 26th March 2026.

This letter is exceptionally important due to Mary Anning’s pre-eminent place in British history, and we are desperate to preserve this item in the designated nationally important collection of Lyme Regis Museum, which is sited on her first home and fossil shop.

Mary Anning was a pioneering female at the birth of palaeontology and geology as a scientific discipline. Born in Lyme Regis in 1799 to a poor working-class family she overcame the societal pressures of class and s*x to be a groundbreaking female palaeontologist. Her achievements were celebrated by scientists during her life and by generations of scientists after her death in 1847."
