Margaret Atwood is a poet, novelist, literary critic, environmental activist, and inventor. She's won numerous prizes for her work and holds several patents. She is a great example of a POWERful woman.

"A word after a word after a word is power." -- Margaret Atwood

Esteemed Canadian novelist and poet Margaret Atwood is the author of 15 books of poetry and numerous novels, including The Handmaid's Tale, Cat's Eye, The Robber Bride, The Blind Assassin, The Edible Woman, and Oryx and Crake. She won the Booker Prize -- which honors the best original novel published that year -- for "The Blind Assassin" in 2000 and has been shortlisted several additional times. She has also won two Governor General's Award, Canada's highest literary honor. This month, the American Academy of Arts and Letters announced that Atwood has been elected as a Foreign Honorary Member of the Academy.

In many of her novels, Atwood explores women's lives in patriarchal societies, including famously in "The Handmaid's Tale." This dystopian science fiction novel centers around one woman's quest for freedom in a totalitarian theocracy where women's rights are completely suppressed.

When brothers sit together, they sell their sisters to others."

Take a minute today and read the poems that accompany these haunting photos of Afghan women. These are beautiful statements about human rights, dignity, and justice that represent the reasons we are so passionate about equality.

"Girls Court brings an all-hands-on-deck approach to the lives of vulnerable girls, linking them to social service agencies, providing informal Saturday sessions on everything from body image to legal jargon, and offering a team of adults in whom they can develop trust."

A national network of Girls Courts aim to help and nurture girls in high-risk, dangerous situations, especially those coerced into prostitution.

Time for New Mexico to join the network?

Girls Court, a special tribunal that is part of a network across the country, aims to nurture vulnerable young women — especially those forced into prostitution — instead of treating them as criminals.
