sUAS Check Pilot Examiner Evaluation Conducted at New Mexico Military Institute

On May 29, 2026, members of New Mexico Senior Squadron II, including 2nd Lt. Joseph Orona, 2nd Lt. Ken Mashke, Capt. Anthony Torres, and 1st Lt. David Aragon, traveled to New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, New Mexico, to conduct a Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) Check Pilot Examiner evaluation for 2nd Lt. Orona, New Mexico Wing Director of sUAS Operations.

The evaluation was administered by 1st Lt. Brady Parker of the Roswell Composite Squadron.

2nd Lt. Orona currently holds qualifications as a UAS Technician and UAS Mission Pilot. The Check Pilot Examiner qualification is a key leadership and standardization role within the Civil Air Patrol sUAS program. Members who hold this qualification are responsible for evaluating and certifying Check Pilots and helping ensure training and operational standards are consistently applied throughout the program.

Civil Air Patrol sUAS pilots must adhere to both CAP and Federal Aviation Administration standards for safe and effective operations. Through the qualification process, Check Pilot Examiners help ensure that pilots operate safely, professionally, and in compliance with all applicable regulations.

This evaluation reflects Civil Air Patrol’s commitment to maintaining high standards while embracing technologies that expand mission capabilities in service to our communities, state, and nation. As CAP continues to grow its sUAS program, these aircraft provide valuable support during search and rescue missions, disaster relief operations, damage assessment, aerial imaging, and other emergency services activities.

Having qualified Check Pilots, Instructor Pilots, and Check Pilot Examiners helps ensure that CAP sUAS operations remain safe, effective, and mission ready whenever members are called upon to serve.

New Mexico Wing Member Spotlight: First Lt. Thomas McConnell

First Lt. Thomas McConnell, New Mexico Wing Cadet Orientation Flight Coordinator, brings a lifetime of aviation experience to the cockpit and to the cadets he mentors. His path began early and continues to shape how he introduces young people to flight.

McConnell started flying at 16 while spending a summer in Illinois. Working as a lineman at Galt Airport, he would trade a week's worth of work for an hour of flight instruction in a Cessna 150, accumulating about 10 hours. Back in Albuquerque, he continued training with Southwest Air Rangers and earned his private pilot certificate in a Piper Warrior. At the same time, he began flying balloons after his father purchased one, earning his commercial balloon certificate at the age of 17 and becoming one of the youngest balloon pilots in the country at that time, in 1974.

Today, McConnell flies a wide range of aircraft, including his Piper Cherokee 180, his Aerostar S-57H hot air balloon, and all types of Civil Air Patrol aircraft in the Wing, including the Cessna 172, 182, Turbo 182, and Turbo 206. He serves as a mission pilot, transport mission pilot, and orientation pilot for both cadets and AFROTC, and also holds a remote pilot certificate.

Roswell Squadron Supports Artesia Senior Salute Event

Roswell Squadron Civil Air Patrol cadets helped support a longtime community tradition while gaining hands-on experience in volunteer service, teamwork, and safe event operations during the Artesia Rotary Club’s annual pancake breakfast for the 2026 Artesia High School Senior Salute.

Cadets and adult members met at midnight at the First Baptist Church kitchen, where adult members supervised cadets as they prepared and cooked pancakes for hundreds of seniors and guests. The group also assisted with delivering pancakes and sausage during the event.

The project provided cadets an opportunity to serve the community, develop practical skills, and work together as a team. Before the morning concluded, cadets successfully worked together to flip a giant pancake.

Roswell Squadron cadets and adult members proudly support communities throughout the Roswell area and southeastern New Mexico through volunteer service, leadership, and emergency services missions. Spirit Squadron Cadets Support Albuquerque Memorial Day Service

On May 25, 2026, Memorial Day, Civil Air Patrol assisted with the Albuquerque Memorial Day Service, continuing a tradition of supporting the event each year.

Spirit Squadron cadets C/CMSgt Blake Keffler, C/SMSgt Dylan Keffler, C/MSgt Rachel Luter, C/SSgt Brian Denardi, C/SrA Davis Aragon, and C/A1C Nathaniel Jones helped throughout the service by greeting guests, handing out water, and assisting attendees to their seats.

As the service came to a close, a storm suddenly rolled into the area. The cadets quickly stepped in to help with cleanup efforts and assisted event organizers as the ceremony wrapped up.

One of Civil Air Patrol's core values is respect, and Memorial Day is a time to show respect for those who have served our country. It is also a time to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation. By serving at this event, the cadets had the opportunity to honor veterans and help support a meaningful community tradition.
