Happy January,
Voting on the remaining capital outlay funds will be occurring soon and it would be great to reach out to local legislators to remind them of the importance of Boca, and that no money has been allocated towards the upkeep of this facility.
You can find your legislators here: https://www.nmlegis.gov/members/find_my_legislator.
Below is a sample email you can send advocating for their support of Boca Negra:
Subject: Strong Support for the Boca Negra Horseman's Complex
The Honorable [Legislator's Full Name],
My name is [Your Name] and I am a constituent residing at [Your Address or Town, State, ZIP code]. I am writing to express my strong support for the improvement of New Mexico's only public all-discipline equestrian facility at the Boca Negra Horsemen's Complex located on the West Mesa in Albuquerque (SD 23/HD 29). As a dedicated equestrian and resident of your district, the improvement of this facility is personally important to me. Access to equestrian facilities provides significant benefits to our community:
Outdoor Recreation Economy: Nationwide, equestrian sports contribute $177 billon to local economies. Improving New Mexico's only public all-discipline equestrian facility will enhance the ability of New Mexico to host rodeos, 3-day events, breed-specific horseshows, and other livestock events. Boca Negra is used by equestrians from across the state from a variety of disciplines.
Physical and Mental Well-being: Equestrian and livestock activities offer valuable outdoor recreation opportunities that promote a healthy lifestyle for many residents, including youth and can help bridge the rural/urban divide.
Community Benefits: The Boca Negra Horseman's Complex provides many benefits to the surrounding community by protecting open lands and providing infrastructure for hiking, dog walking, dog shows, wildlife habitat, and connectivity to the West Mesa Trails system.
Emergency Response: In times of natural disasters like fires or floods, equestrian facilities are essential for the safe evacuation and housing of large animals.
Mitigating the Effects of a Potential Expo NM Closure: If Expo NM redevelopment plans involve eliminating livestock facilities, the state must invest in offsetting that loss to the equestrian and livestock community and improving the Boca Negra Horseman's Complex presents an excellent opportunity.
I urge you to support allocating capital outlay funding to the improvement of the Boca Negra Horseman's Complex. It is vital that we ensure these public lands remain protected, properly funded, and accessible for all user groups, including equestrians, for current and future generations.
Thank you for your time and for considering my views on this important matter. I would be grateful for your response and hope to see your leadership in safeguarding our open spaces.
Sincerely,
