Students at Berino are getting the garden prepped and ready to build healthy soil with Ms. Abi! 🌱 They added fresh compost and introduced worms 🪱 to help enrich the soil.

They also discovered some huge vegetables that had to be pulled from the garden because the heat and they had become too overgrown. Unfortunately, they were too bitter to eat, but it was fun to see just how big the beets and carrots had grown! 🥕

Our team traveled down south this week for our last training together, and what an incredible experience it was!

We had a wonderful time with La Semilla Food Center, thank you for welcoming us into your space and teaching us how you grow food for the community. Your work is truly inspiring.

We’re also very grateful to Dirty Girl Compost for introducing us to Johnson-Su bioreactors and sharing the amazing composting efforts happening in your community.

We’re excited to take everything we learned back with us and share it with our students. And of course, the sunflowers were out, and we couldn’t resist snapping a few photos! 🌻

Tasting the Whole Carrot! 🥕
Our Student Nutrition Specialist, Deana, led a special taste test at Doña Ana Elementary School, where students had the opportunity to experience the whole carrot through a delicious carrot top pesto.
Through, class-by-class visits, Deana witnessed students’ curiosity, reactions, and excitement! Students took agency in the experience by sharing their honest opinions through a “Loved It, Tried It, or Liked It” bean-voting activity, centering student voice throughout the tasting.
The pesto was a hit, and students had a great time exploring flavor, choice, and food in a fun and engaging way 🌱

Before planting their salsa garden outdoors, students at San Felipe Pueblo Elementary started their seeds and something even more meaningful, their intentions. 🌱🍅

With member LaShone Cate’s support, each student planted seeds in their starts and wrote intentions for the plants, the garden, and themselves. They drew, colored, and reflected on what they hope to grow this season, in the soil and in their own lives. 💚
