Recent email from UNM re coronavirus
Restricted access to University of New Mexico Albuquerque campus pursuant to Governor Lujan Grisham’s Public Health Orders
Dear UNM campus community,
The Coronavirus pandemic has presented a variety of challenges to public institutions. Here at UNM, we have taken many steps over the past several weeks to secure the well-being of our community and support state and national efforts to stem the spread of the virus. Among other things, we have promoted best practices for hygiene, implemented remote learning modes for our classes, moved the majority of our students out of our residence halls, migrated most employees to remote work, and are adhering to social distancing orders and “stay at home” instructions issued by the Secretary of the New Mexico Department of Health.
For the safety of the UNM campus community and residents of the communities surrounding UNM, the UNM Albuquerque campus, excluding UNM Hospitals facilities, will be open only to current students, faculty, staff, and established vendors and contractors. This includes indoor and outdoor facilities and spaces. Groups of more than five (5) people, whether affiliated with UNM or not, will be asked to cease their activities in order to adhere to social distancing guidelines ordered by the State of New Mexico. The restrictions to on-campus access detailed above will be enforced by the UNM Police Department and other UNM security personnel and is in effect beginning April 9, 2020, until further notice.
Authorized persons on campus, including student residents, should carry UNM identification in case they are contacted by law enforcement personnel during their patrol activities to ensure campus safety. Established vendors and contractors should also have appropriate identification.
Individuals from the community will still be permitted to traverse the campus on foot, skateboard, or bicycle, as long as they are adhering to social distancing guidelines and group size mandates. The intent is to allow adjacent neighborhoods access through campus without allowing them to congregate anywhere including the Duck Pond, North Campus Golf Course or Johnson Field.
UNM recognizes its obligations under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) and the UNM Police Department will ensure that those individuals seeking treatment at the UNM Hospitals, including the Emergency Department, Cancer Center and other medical clinics are not interfered with in that process so they can receive an appropriate medical screening examination, stabilization, and/or treatment, as the case may be. Visitors to UNM Hospital, the Emergency Department, Cancer Center and other medical clinics will need to comply with UNM Hospital and clinic policies relative to visitors during this Coronavirus pandemic.

Sincerely,
