5 Reasons to Make Your Will

Surveys indicate that seven out of ten people will die without a will. Maybe you are one of them. If so, here are five reasons to make your will.

1. You decide how to disburse your assets.
2. You choose the personal representative who you trust to handle your estate.
3. You determine who has guardianship for your minor children.
4. You designate your favorite charities to benefit in your estate planning.
5. You help your grieving loved ones by communicating your final wishes clearly.

You may feel uneasy about making out your will or consulting an attorney. The New Mexico Baptist Foundation can assist you with names of attorneys we have worked with in the past.

While you will still need to meet with a professional advisor for expert counsel, meeting with the Foundation can help you in determining what questions to ask and your desires for charitable gifting.

Estate-planning Tip *Health Care Reminders*
Be sure to complete your health Care Directive to explain exactly what medical procedures you desire in the event you cannot speak for yourself in end-of-life health care decisions. Inform your loved ones of your decisions. Make a list for them outlining your current doctors, medications, pharmacy, and health insurance information. Let them also know if you have long-term health care insurance.

Estate Planning Tip: When making estate plans, take the time to make a list of your electronic accounts (social media, streaming services, member rewards, music, gaming, apps, etc.) with your username, password, and any other identifying information. This will allow your loved ones to close the accounts after your death.

Are your beneficiary designations up-to-date (insurance policies, IRAs, pensions, investments, etc.)?
Having beneficiaries designated is a great way to avoid probate and transfer financial items upon death. It is also a wonderful way to give to a charity.
As always, you can donate to the NM Baptist Foundation for a multitude of causes, i.e. missions, scholarships, creation care, compassion ministries/services, pastoral support, your local church, and others.

Donating securities through the NMBF

You may wish to consider a charitable gift of appreciated securities before 2017 closes. This is especially true with historic gains in the stock market this year and tax reform on the horizon that may increase your after-tax "cost" of giving in 2018.

Securities may be donated to the charities of your choosing through the New Mexico Baptist Foundation.

It is often advantageous to make a charitable gift of appreciated securities held long-term (a year and a day). If you sell the appreciated securities, the gain is subject to federal income tax. If you make a charitable gift of the appreciated securities, there is no federal income tax on the gain, AND itemizers can deduct the appreciated value of the securities on Schedule A, subject to limitations.

Please consult with your tax advisor concerning how the rules for giving appreciated securities apply to your specific tax situation.
