HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US! ABQ author Robert E. "VardeBob" Vardeman reminds us that the first meeting of the ABQ SF Society took place in June 1965 - that means our lit'l club is 60 years old this month! Pretty amazing considering ASFS started with 6-10 people gathering in people's houses.
--This month - Friday the 13th at 7:30 pm - we will be having our Annual Summer Movie Night with a "monster at the beach" B&W film from the 1960s. And we'll have a couple of three-ring binders full of ASFS history for folks to peruse.

Tomorrow - Friday, May 10 - at 7:30 pm, JEFF BENHAM of 7000 BC visits the ABQ Science Fiction Society to talk about "Truth, Justice, and the American: How Comics Animate Culture.” --
"Modern comics are generally considered to have risen from sociopolitical cartoons around the turn of the twentieth century. Despite their ‘grown-up’ inception, comics quickly came to be considered merely ‘kid stuff.’ Reflection on their actual history reveals comics to not only offer up a mirror of our fears and beliefs, but to in fact be an active force in the evolution of our culture."
ASFS meets in the Activity Room (enter through door on northside of church)
St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 5301 Ponderosa Ave NE
(just of San Mateo Blvd near Erna Ferguson Library, between Comanche & Montgomery). We ask newcomers for a suggested $1.00 donation to help pay the rent. https://www.bubonicon.com/calendar/event/abq-sf-society-comics-culture

This Friday - October 13 - 7:30 pm at the ABQ Science Fiction Society - Skeptic author Benjamin Radford visits to talk on "Friday the 13th: Curses, Luck, and Superstitions.“
Radford says, "Friday the 13th is said to be an especially unlucky day, combining fears about Fridays and concerns over the number 13. Obviously it’s been a boon to horror film franchises, but for many who believe in curses and superstitions it’s serious business. Many people around the world believe in some form of luck, whether cursings or blessings. Join Benjamin Radford as he discusses some of the cultural and psychological origins of superstitions, from four-leaf clovers to the evil eye. ”
ASFS meets in the Activity Room of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 5301 Ponderosa Ave NE (just east of San Mateo, between Comanche & Montgomery). Newcomers welcome with a suggested $1.00 donation to help pay our rent at the church.
