Albuquerque City Councilor Stephanie W. Telles Tuesday presented AARP New Mexico with a city of Albuquerque proclamation recognizing World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) and highlighting the importance of prevention. AARP New Mexico was honored to receive this recognition and appreciates Councilor Telles and the City Council for raising awareness of this critical issue and supporting efforts to protect and empower older adults throughout our community.

Today, we commemorate “Juneteenth,” the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free from slavery in the United States. This was two years after the Emancipation Proclamation and marks the final enforcement of the executive order. While the holiday started with small celebrations in Texas, it has grown in scope across the country, marking the end of slavery in the US. It became an official national holiday on June 17, 2021.

AARP New Mexico was proud to be part of the Albuquerque Pride Parade, part of PrideFest 2026, held Saturday. The route went from Nob Hill down Central with more festivities following on Civic Plaza. AARPNM staff and volunteers gave out sling backpacks with information and goodies to spectators who lined the route.

In New Mexico, 1 in 5 people, or 476,894, receive Social Security Benefits. The new Social Security Trustees Report released today shows that the Social Security trust funds are expected to be depleted in 2034. Congress needs to act now to close the projected shortfall of just under 20%, or Americans will face Social Security cuts that they cannot afford. No family should see any cuts to what they’ve earned in Social Security.
