The city of Albuquerque kicked off its Age-Friendly Housing Design Competition Tuesday at a special event held at Fusion. The competition is open to professionals and the UNM School of Architecture and Planning students to design cottages that allow people to age in place and may help the city’s affordable housing shortage. The competition is due in part to an AARP 2026 Community Challenge Grant award to the city in June. Designs are due Nov. 13. New Mexicans have spent a lifetime paying into Social Security. It's their money and needs to be protected. We've earned it. Reducing benefits, however, is not the answer when other options are available. Congress needs to be transparent and openly discuss Social Security's future.

Older Americans simply can’t afford cuts to Social Security and strongly oppose them. AARP Executive Vice President and Chief Advocacy and Engagement Officer Nancy LeaMond recently testified before Congress on legislation that would short-circuit debate and hide cuts behind closed-door commissions and echoed that sentiment with a Letter to the Editor, published by The Washington Post.

Thank you to everyone who joined our “Your Voice Matters Town Hall” last Thursday. Participants provided some good discussion. We appreciate the audience sharing their concerns with us and will follow up on some of the points raised. Additionally, we want to thank our special guests, Dan Boyd, the Albuquerque Journal’s Capitol Bureau Chief in Santa Fe, and Joe Monahan, political blogger and founder of New Mexico Politics with Joe Monahan, for sharing an overview of New Mexico politics.

AARP is proud to partner with the city of Albuquerque, a 2026 AARP Community Challenge grant recipient, to find innovative ways to discover more affordable housing for the community.
