The latest frauds and scams are always evolving, making it harder to separate reality from the lies. Join AARP New Mexico for this teletown hall with fraud expert Paul Greenwood to discuss what to look for and how to protect your finances from criminals. Greenwood is a retired San Diego deputy district attorney who, for 22 years, headed the Elder Abuse Prosecution Unit in the San Diego DA’s Office, prosecuting 750 cases across the spectrum of elder abuse.

71 million Americans, including 476,894 New Mexicans, rely on Social Security for a secure retirement. The average benefit nationwide is $2,075. In New Mexico, the average benefit is $1,865. Social Security is a critical source of income for retired individuals and must be protected now and in the future. That was just one of the messages AARP representatives brought to Congress this week. New Mexico State Director Joseph Roybal-Sanchez and State President Christian Halstead visited with Sen. Ben Ray Lujan, Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández, Rep. Gabe Vasquez and Xylene Rodriguez, Legislative Assistant to Rep. Melanie Stansbury.

They will join other AARP state office representatives from across the country and converge on Capitol Hill to visit with our Congressional Delegation to emphasize the importance of programs like Social Security, Medicare, resources for family caregivers and low-cost prescription drugs.
