AARP New Mexico works on issues that impact the 50 plus population here in the state. Those issues can have a national overview such as Social Security or Medicare or can be germaine only to New Mexico such as utility requests for rate increases or mortgage protections. AARP New Mexico also is resource for sharing information and going out in communities to provide information and resources on topics such as retirement planning, preventing identity theft, and mobility options for an aging population.

Earlier this month, AARP New Mexico marked its annual Day of Service by volunteering at Roadrunner Food Bank, helping to sort through vegetables, including carrots and potatoes, some of which created some whimsical shapes, and prepared boxes for clients. The Day exemplifies our founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus's, belief that people should serve, not be served.

AARPNM was proud to join Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller and Councilor Stephanie Telles for the official signing of Ordinance O-26-49, known as the “Virtual Currency Ordinance,” which bans the use of crypto kiosks, or ATMs, within the city limits. The bill was sponsored by Councilors Telles and Tammy Fiebelkorn. AARP Advocacy Director Othiamba Umi spoke at the press conference, emphasizing that the machines help criminals steal people’s money, as once the money is deposited, it can’t be traced and is gone forever. AARP New Mexico Staff Othiamba Umi and Beth Velasquez testified last week before the Albuquerque City Council about how criminals use cryptocurrency kiosks, also known as Crypto ATMs, to steal people’s money and the impact these crimes have on victims. The Council passed the “Virtual Currency Ordinance", sponsored by Councilors Stephanie Telles and Tammy Fiebelkorn, that bans such machines within Albuquerque city limits. The mayor has until Monday to act on the legislation.
