Albuquerque’s Common Bond New Mexico Foundation (www.commonbond.nm.org) is devoted to strengthening the Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Q***r (LGBTQ+) community of New Mexico through programs and partnerships that serve at-risk sectors of the LGBTQ+ population. The foundation has two programs devoted to achieving this goal: the Emergency Project and our Under 21 (U-21) Youth Program. Sinc
e 1986, Common Bond's U-21 Project has provided one of the only places for Albuquerque's LGBTQ+ youth to socialize in a safe, welcoming, and affirming environment. Every Friday night, youth and adult facilitators come together in a setting free of bullying or judgement. We provide an environment where every youth can express their true self without fear of being teased, mistreated, or physically harmed. In a world where LGBTQ+ rights are still being debated – teen su***de rates due to mistreatment are high, and members of the LGBTQ+ community are still victims of prejudice and abuse – organizations such as U-21 are critical to the health and well being of our city's youth. Common Bond’s Emergency Project has provided last resort financial assistance to low-income New Mexicans living with HIV/AIDS. Within 24 hours, we provide up to $200 to help pay for rent, utilities, medicine, eye glasses, health insurance and other necessities of life. Last year the Emergency Project partnered with six public health organizations across New Mexico in disbursing over $28,000 to assist 131 male, female and transgender clients. The Emergency Project is operated on an entirely volunteer basis, ensuring 100% of all grant funds and private donations go to people in acute financial need.
