Happy New Year! and Mark your Calendars! Albuquerque Flute Fiesta will be March 11th, 2017! We will have a weekend filled with flute events that you won't want to miss. Our guest artist this year, is Assistant Professor of Flute at Texas A&M Commerce, Dr. Julee Kim Walker.

Julee's Bio: A native Houstonian, flutist Julee Kim Walker remains an active performer and pedagogue in the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex. She is Assistant Professor of Flute at Texas A&M University-Commerce. Prior to her appointment, she held teaching positions at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Grayson College, Eastfield College, and the University of North Texas. Julee received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Texas at Austin and her Master’s degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She received the Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from the University of North Texas. Dr. Walker has served on the Board of Directors in the Texas Flute Society and the Oklahoma Flute Society, and is the Director of the annual Texas Summer Flute Symposium.

As a versatile chamber musician, she has performed and recorded with the jazz chamber group, Evan Weiss Project, and with the rock band Oso Closo. Julee has also performed and recorded with the North Texas Wind Symphony under Eugene Corporon, where she can be heard on the Klavier Wind Project, GIA WindWorks and the Teaching Music through Performance in Band series from 2005-2009. She appeared as soloist with the American Wind Symphony Orchestra, and has performed at the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, and the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles conventions.

Bart Feller, Principal Flute of the Santa Fe Opera, and Jesse Tatum, Principal Flute of the Santa Fe Symphony, have teamed up for a program of superlative and adventurous flute music, performing works from the 18th century through today. The flutists wish to express their gratitude to the community by performing for voluntary donation at the San Miguel Chapel, the oldest church in the continental United States, in Santa Fe, NM. All proceeds will benefit the restoration and preservation of the Chapel.
Works by W.F. Bach, Dorff, Hindemith, Primosch, Szervánszky, Takemitsu, and others to be performed.

Upcoming AFA Event:

Attention all students grades 8-11 who are interested in auditioning for the Albuquerque Youth Symphony groups.

There will be an audition masterclass Saturday, April 25 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. in room 1111 in the UNM Center for the Arts. Excerpts will be played, and students will have a chance to play their prepared scales and solos. Valerie Potter will teach the class.

The Donna Marie Haire Young Artist Competition will be held in Denton, TX, on May 16, 2015. This flute competition is open to all school age flutists.
