United Voices for Newcomer Rights -UVNR

United Voices for Newcomer Rights -UVNR UVNR is a community-led organization dedicated to mobilizing educational, economic, cultural, social, and health resources in partnership with newcomers.

We aim to empower newcomers by making system changes that supports their well-being. Our mission is to cultivate educational, economic, cultural, social, physical, and mental health resources in partnership with newcomers, empowering them to achieve system change that supports their well-being and successful integration into their new communities. We envision New Mexico leading the country in refu

gee resettlement and immigration policies that humanely support newcomers, building on their strengths, and promoting their civic engagement. Our values are rooted in social justice, racial equity, inclusion, capacity building, leadership development, and system change. UVNR is committed to using non-stigmatized language, such as "newcomer," to encompass refugees, immigrants, asylum seekers, and anyone new to the U.S., fostering solidarity and recognition of shared experiences. UVNR embraces community-based approaches, emphasizing shared decision-making and minimizing power differentials. We implement trauma-informed, culturally, and linguistically appropriate services and programs that promote racial equity and community inclusion. By doing so, we ensure that all newcomers—regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, or other aspects of their identity—have access to resources and opportunities necessary to thrive in the U.S. UVNR serves newcomers residing in New Mexico, including refugees, immigrants, asylum seekers, and anyone new to the United States. Our mission is to provide culturally and linguistically tailored support, meeting the unique needs of these populations as they navigate the complexities of integration. Our services are delivered through a team of Community Advocates—direct service providers who have themselves arrived as newcomers and share the experiences, languages, and cultural backgrounds of the populations they serve. These Community Advocates bridge the gap between UVNR and the newcomer community, bringing valuable lived experience and cultural insight to their roles, which strengthens the organization’s connection with and support for its participants. UVNR currently assists individuals and families from diverse regions, including Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo, Ukraine, Mexico, and Central and South America. We primarily support speakers of Swahili, Kirundi, and Kinyarwanda from African countries; Dari and Pashto from Afghanistan; and Arabic and Spanish from the Middle East and Latin America. Our commitment goes beyond basic services, as we aim to foster meaningful community inclusion and support, ensuring newcomers—regardless of their race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, or other identity factors—can access the resources they need to build fulfilling lives in their new communities. Through culturally appropriate programs, UVNR facilitates newcomers’ successful integration into the economic, social, and civic fabric of New Mexico, enhancing their opportunities to thrive and contribute.

This podcast episode explores climate-driven displacement and the urgent need for equitable responses: https://mpichangingclimatechangingmigration.podbean.com/e/climate-displacement-africa/?eType=EmailBlastContent&eId=ff205c35-112a-4b4e-993b-d11496c0add2

Have you ever heard of soft socializing? 👟

It’s an easy, low-pressure way to connect with people - just showing up, moving, and being together, with no pressure to talk the whole time. Running in a group can help improve mood, reduce stress, and support mental health. Research shows that regular physical activity like running is associated with lower symptoms of depression and anxiety, better emotional well-being, and improved stress regulation. It can also support consistency and motivation because people are more likely to stay active when they feel connected to others. (eClinicalMedicine, 2025)

Mental Health and Technology - Part I: Mental Health and AI:

AI is becoming a big part of how we think about mental health - offering both real support and real risks. On the positive side, AI can be accessible 24/7, offering instant support, companionship, and guidance when people need it most. It can even help improve efficiency in mental health care. (Wei, M. (n.d.)). But there’s another side. Overuse can lead to emotional dependence, social isolation, and even addictive behavior. In some cases, AI may reinforce harmful thoughts or fail to respond safely to serious mental health concerns, where human empathy and professional care are essential. (Fuller, 2025). It is important to note that AI should not be a replacement for real connection. Our monthly Tea Circle's create a welcoming space for social connection and relationship-building while also offering resources on various topics like how to navigate technology and mental health.

Tea has long been connected to mental well-being, offering moments of calm, reflection, and connection across cultures. In Japan, tea ceremonies cultivate calm and presence; in China, Gong Fu Cha celebrates patience and mindfulness; in Morocco, mint tea welcomes guests and strengthens community; and in India, chai brings people together for daily conversation and connection. Drinking tea can support mental health in many ways: it can promote relaxation and reduce stress, support better sleep and ease anxiety, encourage mindfulness and create a calming daily routine, and foster social connection, which is an important part of emotional well-being. Consider a visit to support our local tea stores and learn about new flavors and cultures! Join us for our Tea Circle on March 28th, featuring teas from around the world, an intergenerational conversation on parenting in the digital age, and community tree planting.
