The Verizon strike is over and we won! The working people at Verizon and Verizon Wireless are returning to work knowing that their hard work resulted in big gains and saved good, union jobs. *

Elva , your help was critical in this fight and we want to extend our sincere thanks. Supporters like you came out to picket lines, took action online, and donated tens of thousands of dollars that helped support the working families on strike. We should be proud of what we accomplished together.

In 2014, President Obama directed the Secretary of Labor to update the overtime regulations to reflect the original intent of the Fair Labor Standards Act, simplifying and modifying the rules to make it easier for workers and businesses to understand and apply.

Today is that historic day. The Department of Labor (DOL) has just announced new regulations regarding overtime pay. No longer is overtime reserved just for those who earn hourly wages or make less than $23.6K a year. Under the final rule:

Now the pay threshold has been raised to include those who earn salaried pay and who earn up to $47,476 a year, ensuring protection for some 4.2 million workers.
The salary threshold will automatically update every three years based on wage growth, increasing predictability.
Overtime protections will be strengthened for workers already entitled to overtime, and
Workers and employees will gain greater clarity.
For more information on overtime pay, visit the DOL website.
The Coalition of Labor Union Women has always been a supporter in the fight for equal rights and fair wages, and recognizes the importance of this rule for workers. Now employees can work over 40 hours knowing they will be getting proper compensation, or have more leisure time to spend with their families. If the employer doesn’t want to pay time-and-a-half at the overtime rate, then they must employ someone else at the standard rate to fill in for the extra hours, thus creating new job opportunities for more workers.

The new rule will go into effect on December 1, 2016, giving employees ample time to prepare. The final rule does not make any changes to the duties test of executive, administrative and professional employees.

Please join us in celebrating all day long by participating in a tweet storm sponsored by the Economic Policy Institute (EPI):

Save the Date: April 12th is Equal Pay Day

Tuesday, April 12th is Equal Pay Day. More than 50 years have passed since the Equal Pay Act and women still make only 79 cents for every dollar a man makes. The wage gap is even larger for women of color, such as African-Americans who make only 60 cents to the dollar or Latinas who are paid only 55 cents for every dollar paid to white non-Hispanic men. On Equal Pay Day, we’re holding lawmakers and candidates accountable to make sure they know how critical this issue is.

Join CLUW and various other organizations for a tweet storm which marks the day on which women’s pay finally catches up to what their white male counterparts were paid last year alone:
