"While the State Land Office often flies under the radar for many voters, it remains one of New Mexico’s most consequential agencies, managing nine million surface acres — including a vast array of fragile ecosystems that are home to native wildlife — to fund education and public institutions. For those wanting the most qualified leader to take the helm at the State Land Office, the clear choice is Matthew McQueen."
-Stacy Sutton Kerby, APV Chief Government Affairs Officer

U.S. Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández(NM 3rd Congressional District), in a House Rules Committee meeting on April 27, 2026, spoke in support of a bipartisan amendment to the House Farm Bill that would have stripped the dangerous “Save Our Bacon Act” language from the bill. As Rep. Leger Fernandez astutely pointed out: humane standards for farmed animals is not only an important “matter of the heart” but also good for consumers and small farmers.

But the dangerous “Save Our Bacon Act” language is still in the Farm Bill—and the Senate now needs to take that language out. Please contact Sen. Ben Ray Luján at 202-224-6621 and urge him to join his New Mexico colleagues in Congress in opposing the “Save Our Bacon Act” and fighting to strip that language out to protect New Mexico’s animals, safeguard consumers and small farmers, and preserve the right to legislate within our state.

APV strongly supports Matthew McQueen as the best qualified candidate in the race for State Land Commissioner. Apart from his huge legislative wins to protect wildlife and public land in New Mexico, McQueen also took on the oil and gas companies to make more money for our schools through the State Land Office—which is the primary function of that Office.

Albuquerque’s animals urgently need your help!

The City of Albuquerque is finalizing their Fiscal Year 2027 budget, and it includes massive cuts in funding for the Animal Welfare Department. These budget cuts will eliminate 14 critical animal protection and law enforcement positions, and reduce spay/neuter and vaccination services for community cats by 50%. The result will set the City back years in its work to improve animal welfare, serve communities, and protect public health and safety.

Before the next City Council meeting, Mayor Tim Keller and City Councilors need to hear from you! Respectfully urge them to fully restore the budget for the Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department:

🔸Mayor Keller: [email protected] / 505-768-3000

Animal Protection Voters has stepped in to defend New Mexico’s affordable spay/neuter law—and last Friday, our legal team made the case directly before the judge: the law is constitutional and must be upheld.
