elevAte 2026 New Mexico Architects Medal: Vic Johnson, AIA.

In 2025, Vic was honored with the Turquoise Medal, the highest distinction awarded by the AIA Santa Fe Chapter. Licensed since 1974, Vic has built a career defined by design excellence, professional leadership, and a deep commitment to the architectural character of Santa Fe and the Southwest. As principal of Victor Johnson Architect, he has contributed projects that balance innovation with tradition, clarity with responsiveness to site, and enduring quality with cultural stewardship.

Vic's work reflects a thoughtful approach to architecture as both craft and context, consistently demonstrating rigorous problem-solving and sensitivity to the human experience. His reputation rests not only on the buildings he has designed but also on his role as mentor, collaborator, and advocate for the profession.

elevAte 2026 Associate Award: Anjelica Gallegos, Assoc. AIA.

Anjelica is a tireless advocate for underserved populations. She co-founded and directs the Indigenous Society of Architecture, Planning, and Design (ISAPD), a non-profit dedicated to increasing global consciousness
and appreciation of Indigenous environmental design. Through ISAPD, she develops and manages public programming. A standout achievement was launching the inaugural Indigenous Architecture Days in 2023, an event uniting practitioners, students, and the public, through partnerships with Formative Architecture, AIA NM, and the UNM School of Architecture and Planning to celebrate nature-informed Indigenous architecture.

Her thought leadership significantly elevates our profession's discourse. Anjelica consistently works to educate and champion equity, with her work published in numerous outlets including Architectural Digest, Metropolis
Magazine, Landscape Architecture Magazine, Santa Fe New Mexican, and the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians. Furthermore, she initiated and leads LANDFRAME (originating as Page’s Indigenous Land Acknowledgement Tool, or PILAT). This groundbreaking mapping tool provides site-specific tribal data to integrate Indigenous land awareness into the design process. Through LANDFRAME, she also encourages users to support an ISAPD-managed scholarship fund for Indigenous students pursuing careers in the AEC industry.

elevAte 2026 Young Architect Award: Justin Milburn, AIA.

I am particularly struck by Justin's commitment to the principle of "paying it forward." His dedication to volunteerism has been evident since his school years with AIAS, where he has made significant contributions to AIA Albuquerque, including assisting with the annual Golf Tournament since 2017, both behind the scenes and during fundraising efforts.

Justin's pursuit of involvement within the AIA has evolved from his tenure as an AIAS student member to his current role as President of AIA Albuquerque. His passion for architecture and its multifaceted nature is commendable. He has attended numerous national AIA events and conferences, both as a student and a professional, consistently bringing back valuable insights for the Albuquerque and New Mexico architecture community. His proactive approach to innovation and ex*****on of ideas is an asset to our profession.

As a Young Architect member of the AIA, Justin demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of the architect's role within his firm, the community, and the promotion of architectural education. I am confident that he will continue to emerge as a leader within the AIA while serving as an inspiring mentor to students engaged through AIAS Firm Crawls and other initiatives aimed at supporting licensure.
