In 2024, one seat in the New Mexico House was decided by less than one percentage point. That is a few pews' worth of people.

All 70 House seats are on the ballot this year, and your representative will vote on life, family and parental rights in January. Don't sit this one out.

Universal child care is now state law, backed by up to $700 million over five years.

Before the vote, the Legislature's own analysts raised two warnings. The bill creates no lasting way to pay for it, with a shortfall of up to $400 million a year by 2029. And state child care has not been found to improve educational outcomes for children.

Lawmakers passed it anyway. They also turned down an amendment to help parents who stay home with their children.

New Mexico ranks 49th in the nation for child well-being. Our kids cannot afford an expensive promise that does not deliver. Why were these warnings ignored?

Not everything out of Santa Fe was bad news. Here are five wins worth celebrating.

-Two bills to expand abortion were stopped. House Bill 279 would have given abortion providers new legal shields, and Senate Bill 189 would have created a taxpayer-backed fund to expand abortion.
-More doctors are on the way. House Bill 99 passed the Senate 40 to 2, and Senate Bill 1 gives qualified physicians a faster path to practice here.
-Survivors of childhood abuse will have their day in court. Senate Bill 41 removed the time limit for prosecuting criminal se*ual contact with children.

None of this happened by accident. It happened because New Mexicans spoke up.

Good things are possible, but only when we use our voice. Will you use yours on November 3?

House Bill 156 made permanent the state health department's power to decide which vaccines your child needs for school, and now for child care. An amendment that would have simply told parents about their exemption rights was set aside.

Since 1981, NM law required abortions to be reported to the state. This year, the Legislature repealed that law with SB 30.

Every one of those numbers was a child, and a mother who deserved better. A child who is never counted is easier to forget. We will not forget them.
