Frack Off Greater Chaco

Frack Off Greater Chaco Frack Off Greater Chaco is a collaborative effort between Indigenous community leaders, Native groups, non-profits, and water protectors.

is a solidarity campaign to stop fracking in Greater Chaco. Frack Off Greater Chaco is a collaborative effort between Indigenous community leaders, Native groups, nonprofits, and public lands and water protectors across the southwest and the country working to stop fracking in Greater Chaco. You don't need to live in New Mexico to help. There is a list of officials, (elected, Bureau

of Land Management and Bureau of Indian Affairs) that can be contacted. Here is the list:
http://bit.ly/FrackOffContact

The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Farmington Field Office and the Bureau of Indian Affairs’ (BIA) Navajo Regional Office is undergoing an amendment to BLM's 2003 Resource Management Plan (RMP) to analyze fracking impacts in the Greater Chaco area.

91% of our public lands in Northwest New Mexico are already leased to oil and gas development, with over 40,000 wells. Now, new forms of industrialized fracking development threatens to further fragment the landscape and pollute our air and water resources, endangering the environment and local Navajo communities. Much of the last 9% of unleased land is in Greater Chaco. The BLM admits to never analyzing the impacts of fracking across this landscape and is actively amending its office-wide resource management plan in response. Yet, BLM continues leasing public land and approving fracking in the region with more than 365 new wells and counting on tribal and public lands, as well as new pipelines and other infrastructure. We're calling on supporters to target New Mexico Congressional district offices (especially Senator Udall), BLM field offices, and demonstrate or pray for all that is worth protecting. Meet with officials, send letters, take pictures, rally, and interrupt. Any action is a great action! Please host or attend an event so we can showcase broad support to Frack Off Greater Chaco. Get • Statement of Tó Nizhóní Ání and Diné C.A.R.E. on FERC Acceptance of Preliminary Permit Application for Chilchinbeto Pumped Storage Project on Black Mesa

Groups representing a wide cross-section of Diné who live both on Black Mesa and across the Navajo Nation are renewing their opposition to a new application submitted to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) seeking permission to explore development of a massive pumped hydro storage project near Kayenta.

The proposed Chilchinbeto Pumped Storage project would construct two reservoirs, containing 10,000 acre-feet each of water, one on the rim of Black Mesa and the other 1,500 feet below in the valley. The water to fill the reservoirs would come from either the aquifer deep beneath Black Mesa or possibly the San Juan River, according to the application submitted by the company Nature and People First. After the initial 10,000 acre-feet to fill the reservoirs, the project would require withdrawing another 2,500 acre-feet every year to keep them full – nearly 10 times the estimated annual water use of the town of Kayenta.

You have 3 more days to vote in the primaries- Early voting Friday/ Saturday and Election Day on Tuesday. You can even register the same day and vote! Don’t be a dumb ass - vote.

Reposted • .studio Vote in honor of Navajo code talkers, Jimmy King and Howard and Chester Nez and Isleta Pueblo Marine veteran Miguel Trujillo who were not allowed to vote, even though they had served in World War II.

During WWII, King and Nez were among 29 Navajo men who became Marines and created an unbreakable code based on their Navajo language. Their work was considered crucial to the Allied victory in the Pacific war.

They tried but weren’t allowed to register to vote because along with most New Mexico Natives, were considered as “Indians not taxed” by the state’s constitution and were prohibited from voting. Miguel Trujillo took the county to court, and challenged the ruling, arguing that he shouldn’t be disenfranchised just because he didn’t pay property taxes on the Pueblo lands he lived on.

On Aug. 3, 1948, a panel of three federal judges agreed, and 24 years after being granted citizenship, indigenous people in New Mexico were finally given the right to vote. In 1957, Utah was the last state to ratify voting rights for Native Americans.

“We all know Congress granted the Indian citizenship in 1924, but we still have no privilege to vote, we do not understand what kind of citizenship you would call that.” – Pvt. Ralph Anderson, 1943.

This is what one aspect of tribal consultation looks like - Hopi elder Pe’tuche Gilbert speaking in September 2023 at a Corn Gathering, a meeting of people from across the Western Hemisphere convened to address protecting cultural heritage.

Imagine if we practiced his principles, we wouldn’t need a coalition like Frack Off Chaco.

Get • The New York Times is out today with a major investigation into poisonous PFAS contamination from military bases. The article explains how New Mexico is leading a national effort to make the federal government clean up these toxic “forever chemicals” at bases across the country.

My administration sued the Air Force in 2019, and a federal judge made our case the bellwether for 15,000+ similar suits nationwide. The federal government must be held to account — and New Mexico is making sure of it.

[Um, you say you are against New Mexico’s ground waters being polluted by “forever chemicals “ and yet you keep pushing for the Water Quality Control Commission to approve the O&G industry’s petition to discharge fracking wastewater onto our land and into our water sources. Seems more than@moderately hypocritical]

With Promises of Money, Controversial Gas Pipeline on Navajo Nation Passes First Hurdle

Article from Capital and Main, by Jerry Redfern

Pipeline would cross 234 miles of tribal land in New Mexico and Arizona. Resources and Development Committee of the Navajo Nation Council hearing schedule catches community group off guard.

A 234-mile stretch of pipeline that could carry natural gas or natural gas-hydrogen blends across the Navajo Nation is a step closer to reality.

The Resources and Development Committee of the Navajo Nation Council passed a resolution at the end of March to conditionally allow Tallgrass Energy — through its subsidiary GreenView Resources — to begin work on a section of a natural gas pipeline that will traverse the Navajo Nation, running from a spot near Farmington, New Mexico, to another spot roughly 40 miles north of Flagstaff, Arizona. It is the only vote the Nation will take on this measure. It is also the only segment of the pipeline to be publicly announced.

The resolution passed 3-1, with one council member absent and committee chair Brenda Jesus abstaining.

According to the resolution, the right-of-way is contingent on completion “of all required environmental studies and archaeological clearances.” But the committee debate focused primarily on money — who had it and how to get more of it.

Get • The Rio Grande in Albuquerque is going to start drying pretty soon.

Already, more than 35 miles are dry in the San Acacia reach and another ten miles are dry in the Isleta reach near Peralta.

This short video shows what it looked (and sounded!) like at about 100 cubic feet per second in Albuquerque this morning. I adored listening to all the yellow-breasted chats and warblers and so many others. And my heart breaks to think of how the drying affects all the birds and other wildlife that live in the river and the bosque.

Downstream, at the Central Bridge in Albuquerque the river is at only 43 cubic feet per second.
