New Mexico has a rich Black history that often goes untold. Our State Historian, Rob Martinez, has written a fascinating article exploring Black history in New Mexico, from early settlers to present day contributions that shape our state.

While February is Black History Month, these stories deserve recognition year-round.

"African history runs deep in New Mexico. Black history is often framed within the institution of slavery, but in New Mexico, New Mexicans of African descent were ambassadors, explorers, colonists, soldiers, cowboys, discoverers, settlers, businessmen, educators, and much more. That chapter in New Mexico history continues to be written."

Artist Talk |‘Tewa Nangeh/Tewa Country,’ Saturday, January 17 at 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM at Sky Cinemas: Railyard | 1606 Alcaldesa St, Santa Fe.

While Georgia O’Keeffe frequently claimed ownership of Northern New Mexico, this land has been the continuous home of these six Tewa Pueblos from time immemorial to the present. Tewa Nangeh/Tewa Country resituates the O’Keeffe narrative back in Tewa Country.

Supported in part by the NMHC, the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is hosting a panel discussion at Sky Cinemas in the Railyard in Santa Fe. The event is sold out but the exhibition is on view until September 7, 2026. For more information visit their website at www.okeeffemuseum.org.

Our colleague's new blog post explores historic cultural sites and the digital work preserving their stories for everyone to experience. "Humanity is ultimately the sum of our stories, which we pass on through our monuments, our traditions, our art and our craft." Meet the Architects and Designers: Pueblo Architecture Today.

This Saturday, August 2, starting at 11:00am, at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque. Don't miss it!

The exhibition “Restorying Our HeartPlaces: Contemporary Pueblo Architecture” offers an associated speaker series sponsored by the New Mexico Humanities Council. “Meet the Architects & Designers: Pueblo Architecture Today” will feature a 1.5 hour program with two panelists followed by a thirty-minute Q&A discussion moderated by the exhibition curators, Dr. Ted Jojola (Isleta Pueblo) and Dr. Lynn Paxson. This panel talk features Beverly Diddy (Diné/Hopi) and Brandon Adriano Ortiz (Taos Pueblo) as panelists. They will be discussing the broad scope of the design and architectural fields while highlighting the range of Pueblo people that are involved in these practices. This session also underscores the tie-in to issues of scale, materiality, and making.

Miguel Trujillo, New Mexico's Unknown Civil Rights Hero
Presented by Gordon Bronitsky

July 12th, 2pm – 4pm
Hosted by Aztec Museum and Pioneer Village
125 N Main Ave, Aztec, NM 87410

In 1948, Miguel Trujillo, a WWII Marine veteran from Laguna, sued New Mexico and obtained the right to vote for Native Americans of the state. This presentation tells his story. The presentation encourages an understanding of the background for voting rights in New Mexico 1912, and encourages people to think beyond the Three Peoples myth to the reality of the struggle that began with the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and continues today.
