Today, we honor Juneteenth, a day that marks the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates the resilience, strength, and contributions of Black communities throughout history. Juneteenth is more than a date in history—it is a testament to the enduring strength of people who continued to hope, resist, and persevere even when freedom was delayed.

Juneteenth is a reminder that freedom is not a single moment in time—it is an ongoing pursuit of justice, dignity, safety, and opportunity for all. As we reflect on this important day, we recognize the generations who fought for liberation and the work that continues to build a future where every person can live free from violence, oppression, and fear.

May we continue to listen, learn, and take action in support of equity and justice in our communities.

Every statistic represents a person, a family, a child, or a community whose life has been impacted by domestic violence.

Nearly 20 people every minute experience physical abuse by an intimate partner. One in four women and one in nine men will experience severe intimate partner violence in their lifetime. Yet only a fraction of those injured receive medical care, and thousands of calls for help are made every day across the country.

These numbers are more than data points—they are a reminder that domestic violence is a widespread public health and community issue that demands our attention, compassion, and action.

By supporting survivors, strengthening services, investing in prevention, and speaking out against abuse, we can help create safer communities where everyone has the opportunity to live free from violence.

If you or someone you know needs support, help is available. You are not alone. We are here for you.

There is incredible strength in choosing to be seen.

For many survivors, sharing their experiences is not just an act of courage—it is an act of resistance. It is a declaration that abuse does not get the final word. It is a reminder that healing is possible, even after unimaginable pain.

When survivors speak their truth, they help dismantle the silence that allows violence to thrive. They create space for understanding, compassion, and change. Their words can become a lifeline for someone who is still searching for hope, wondering if anyone else has walked a similar path and made it through.

Every survivor’s journey is unique. Some share openly, others tell their stories quietly, and some simply live their truth each day without saying a word. All of those choices are valid. What matters is honoring the strength it takes to keep moving forward.

Today, we celebrate the resilience, wisdom, and courage of survivors everywhere. Your experiences have value. Your healing has meaning. And your courage has the power to illuminate a path for others.

Stop letting them define your worth.

Domestic violence, emotional abuse, and coercive control often leave survivors questioning their value, their voice, and even their identity. When someone repeatedly tells you that you are not enough, it can become easy to believe the lie.

But your worth has never belonged to another person to define.

You are not defined by the harm you endured, the words spoken against you, the mistakes you’ve made, or the circumstances you’ve survived. Your value is inherent. It has always been there—before the relationship, during the struggle, and after the healing begins.

To every survivor who is rebuilding, rediscovering themselves, or simply trying to make it through today: you are worthy of safety, respect, love, and dignity. You do not have to earn your humanity. You do not have to prove your worth.

You have always been enough.

Today, may you choose to see yourself through a lens of compassion rather than criticism, strength rather than shame, and hope rather than fear.

Domestic violence can impact every part of a person’s life—emotionally, physically, financially, spiritually, and mentally. The healing journey is often filled with fear, uncertainty, grief, courage, resilience, and hope all at once. That’s why words matter. Compassion matters. Community matters.

To every survivor reading this:
Your feelings are valid.
You are not to blame for the harm done to you.
You deserve safety, peace, respect, and love without fear.
You are stronger than the abuse you endured, even on the days when you don’t feel strong at all.

Healing is not linear. Some days may feel empowering, while others may feel overwhelming. Both can exist at the same time. Setting boundaries is your right. Rest is your right. Saying “no” is your right. Choosing yourself is your right.

No one should ever have to navigate abuse alone. Reaching out for support can feel frightening, but there are people and communities ready to listen, believe, and stand beside survivors without judgment.

Your story matters.
Your voice matters.
Your life matters.

May this be a reminder that healing is possible, hope is real, and survivors deserve a future rooted in safety, dignity, and peace.

Silence allows violence to continue in the shadows. It isolates survivors, fuels fear, and keeps too many people from reaching the support they deserve. But every time someone speaks out, believes a survivor, offers support, or chooses compassion over judgment, we take another step toward ending the cycle of abuse.

At NMCADV, we know that healing begins when survivors are met with safety, dignity, and community. Across New Mexico, advocates work every single day to provide crisis support, shelter, legal advocacy, counseling, prevention education, and hope for individuals and families impacted by domestic violence. This work is life-changing — and lifesaving.

Domestic violence does not discriminate. It impacts people of every age, culture, gender, and community. Behind every statistic is a human being trying to survive, rebuild, and find peace again. Survivors deserve to be heard without blame, supported without conditions, and empowered without fear.

Breaking the silence means having difficult conversations. It means teaching future generations about healthy relationships, accountability, and respect. It means standing beside survivors even when it is uncomfortable. And it means recognizing that ending violence is not the responsibility of survivors alone — it is a collective responsibility.

Together, we rise by creating communities rooted in compassion, justice, and healing. Together, we rise by believing survivors. Together, we rise by refusing to look away.

Sometimes the hardest thing to do is trust ourselves especially after experiencing fear, uncertainty, or harm. Healing begins when we remember that our voice matters, our instincts are valid, and we deserve safety, peace, and joy.

At NMCADV, we stand with every survivor learning to reclaim their power one choice, one boundary, and one step at a time.

You are allowed to choose yourself.
You are allowed to choose healing.
You are allowed to choose a future that feels safe and whole.

Today, we are filled with pride as our unstoppable leaders — Charlotte Gonzalez, Bonnie Escobar, MaryEllen Garcia , and Joella Montoya— met with Melanie Stansbury in Washington, D.C. to advocate for survivors across New Mexico.

Their voices carry the strength, resilience, and urgency of the communities we serve every single day. We are deeply grateful for their leadership, courage, and unwavering commitment to ensuring survivors are seen, heard, and supported.

New Mexico survivors deserve safety, dignity, and resources — and these incredible women continue to fight tirelessly to make that vision a reality.
