Today on World Bicycle Day, we’re celebrating more than transportation. We’re celebrating the importance of building communities where everyone can move safely, connect easily, and thrive.

At the Albuquerque Affordable Housing Coalition, we believe affordable housing and livable neighborhoods go hand in hand. Safe streets, connected bike routes, walkable communities, reliable transit, and access to parks, schools, jobs, and services all play a critical role in creating healthy and equitable communities.

Housing affordability is not just about the cost of rent or a mortgage. It’s also about whether families can safely bike to school, walk to a grocery store, access public transportation, and spend less time and money commuting.

As we continue advocating for affordable housing solutions across Albuquerque and New Mexico, we also support intentional community design that prioritizes safety, accessibility, sustainability, and quality of life for everyone.

Because thriving communities are built for people, not just cars. 🚲

National Fair Housing Month is a time to look closely at the systems shaping access to housing.

The Voucher Promise by Eva Rosen explores the realities of the Housing Choice Voucher Program and how it impacts families seeking stability and opportunity. Through firsthand accounts in a Baltimore neighborhood, the book highlights both the promise of vouchers and the barriers that can limit where families are able to live.

It’s a thoughtful look at how policy can both open doors and reinforce existing inequalities and why equitable access to housing still matters.

National Fair Housing Month invites us to think about what home and community really mean.

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman introduces us to a seemingly grumpy neighbor whose strict routines and solitude are slowly disrupted by the people around him. What unfolds is a story about connection, belonging, and the unexpected ways community can shape our lives.

It’s a reminder that home is more than a place. It’s the people who show up, even when we least expect it.

National Fair Housing Month is also about understanding the history that shaped where and how people live today.

The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson tells the story of the Great Migration, when millions of Black Americans left the South in search of safety, opportunity, and a place to call home. Through deeply personal narratives, the book brings to life the courage it took to seek a better future and the barriers many still faced along the way.

It’s a powerful reminder that the fight for fair housing is rooted in history that continues to shape our communities today.
