This article states: The bacteria spread naturally among rodents like prairie dogs and rats. Fleas that jump from infected animals and bite people can spread the disease.

So the casual reader might think that Prairie Dogs are the leading cause of the disease. While prairie dogs are in the rodent family they only live in the USA and only in short grass prairie from Texas to Canada and from Kansas to the Front Range. Yeah ok there may be some spill over but that's about it. WHY identify "prairie dogs" first? Or at all? Give me a break. Yersinia pestis exists in nature...it is just looking for a carrier. Humans can transmit plague. Get your facts...furthermore plague was brought to the USA in the early 1900s by a ship from the far east...nor has it spread across the USA as some would believe. Sorry for the rant, but have difficulty dealing with fear mongering and ignorance.

The plague, a rare bacterial infection known for its deadly impact in 14th-century Europe, is in the news. It never went away.

Autumn has arrived in all its splendor: winterfat is ripening into woolly white stalks that will sustain a number of species through the cold months; sunsets are gradually slipping south of Mount Taylor toward their winter-solstice turnaround; and the early-morning scent of piñon smoke drifts from fireplaces holding back the chill. The aroma of roasting chile hangs in the air, promising posole and green chile stew. And the air—oh, the air! Gone is summer’s hot breath, replaced by crisp mornings and clear blue skies. So much for waxing eloquently…

The tanks are empty, the cages cleaned, and the hay swept from the staging facility. Our volunteers—bless them—have returned to something resembling a normal schedule. The Suburban and tanker have been put away for what we hope will be a long winter’s rest. And most, if not all, of the prairie dogs are slowly entering torpor.

The staging facility is quiet now, though it still seems to hold the echoes of prairie dogs in transit: happy, hectic, hopeful, fearful—and, at times, perhaps a little hateful—echoes from our temporary guests.

It was a good year.

This is a shared accomplishment—made possible through the sweat equity of our stewards and volunteers, and through the generosity of our many supporters. Thank you all for standing with Prairie Dog Pals and helping give these prairie dogs a safe place to call home.

The fall garage sale has come to an end! Many thanks to Graziella, CJ, Yvonne, Ray, C Rex, Mike, Margaret, Tania, Frances GAR, Frances GAU and Debbie for help in setting up, managing and shutting down the event. When we departed 917 Morris the yard was clean, as clean and hopefully cleaner than when we invaded. Sales again varied throughout the day from brisk to boring and everything in between. We sold a skateboard and a pair of swim fins (for a child) which were definite highlights. Jewelry sold well as did clothes items. All in all it was a good two days that definitely put a dent in the inventory! Woo Hoo! Time to hibernate.

Garage Sale Day 1: I could say our garage sale opened with a hot air balloon and while close by (at the nearby school) it had nothing to do with us. Never the less thanks to Yvonne, Mercedes, Margaret, C Rex, Ray, Tania, Nancy, Frances GAU and Frances GAR and Debbie we did indeed get off to a flying start. Frances, Ray, C Rex and Debbie started putting out tables and merchandise at 6AM and it was pretty brisk, but as time progressed the layers were shed and by 8 everyone was in short sleeves. We had a wide range of merchandise and sales ranged from brisk to boring. On the average I would sales were paced well. Deals were to be had like the gentleman that got 100 blu ray DVDs for $100. Bargaining was the word. Nothing strikes me at the moment as the "sale of the day" but all the sales go towards the preservation of prairie dogs so all is good! Thanks to all of you who helped or contributed or purchased! Tomorrow we start again at 8AM! Hope to see you there! Hope to sell you something!

The Prairie Dog Pals Fall Garage Sale will be held on the 2nd and 3rd of October, 8:00AM-2:00PM, at 917 Morris Street NE (Just north of the intersection of Morris and Lomas). Plan to come by, socialize, and shop! More importantly scour your inventory of fine collectibles and donate any unneeded treasures for the garage sale (please price your items). If you want to volunteer with the set up/sale/knockdown please coordinate with Ray (505 237 0347) or Debbie (505 205 7966), or Ed (505 296 1937). Please tell your friends to come by and spend money. The money will go towards prairie dog preservation. The donations are tax deductible and we will gladly provide you with a certificate stating such. If you have donations for the sale, bring them by after 5 PM the week of the sale; or contact Ray, Debbie, or Ed to arrange a mutually convenient drop off date/time. Finally, after the sale, you can either pick up your unsold items at 2:00 on Saturday, or they will be donated to an animal issues charity/non profit group.
