Prairie Dog Pals Prairie Dog Pals is a prairie dog advocacy organization committed to the preservation of the species and its habitat.

Prairie Dog Pals of Albuquerque, New Mexico helps care for prairie dogs in the city. To ensure their survival we provide supplemental feeding in barren areas. We also capture and relocate prairie dogs where loss of habitat or human conflict threatens their existence. We also educate the public and government officials on the importance of this keystone species.

For decades, our national response to conflicts between livestock and wild carnivores has defaulted to one option: kill the wild animal. It's cruel, costly, and indiscriminate, and the science tells us it often doesn't even work. Lethal removal can fracture pack structures and, in some cases, increase future conflicts.

Last week, that outdated, default position got a real challenge.

Senators Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Steve Daines (R-Mont.) introduced the Human-Wildlife Conflict Reduction Act of 2026, bipartisan legislation that would permanently authorize and expand the US Department of Agriculture's Nonlethal Initiative. This federal pilot program has already helped ranchers and farmers reduce conflict with wild carnivores using tools like range riders, livestock guardian dogs, and electric fencing.

The bill would codify the Nonlethal Initiative into a permanent program, direct new resources toward nonlethal deterrents, provide direct assistance to landowners, agricultural producers, Tribes, and nonprofits, and establish ongoing monitoring to refine coexistence strategies over time.

This bill offers an evidence-based alternative that would protect livestock and rural livelihoods while letting wolves, bears, coyotes, and other carnivores survive in their homes.

Now the bill needs to move. Tell your senators to support the Human-Wildlife Conflict Reduction Act of 2026.

Prairie dog relocation update

The council also discussed prairie dog relocation efforts at Elmer Thomas Park. Officials said 364 prairie dogs were relocated. The stated goal was to move 300 and reduce the overall population by 60% from a baseline of 750.

The Lawton City Council approved several agenda items at its Tuesday meeting, including a support agreement for Lawton Public Schools and a multimillion-dollar agreement for the Fires in Staffing and Tactics Area.
