Albuquerque Public Schools is soliciting feedback for its 2027-28 budget in an online survey open until Oct. 22.

Indigenous Peoples Day: Gives us the opportunity to better understand and celebrate the culture and contributions of both past and contemporary Native peoples.

Today in the U.S., more than 600 Native nations and 6.8 million Americans identify as Native American. However, there continues to be a lack of representation of Native peoples in our political and media arenas.

Today is an occasion to honor the work and achievements of people like Quannah Chasinghorse; Mary Peltola; Toypurina, the Indigenous female freedom fighter; and so many others.

As Public Educators, "Our Job is Political" ✊

Shout-out to Jimmy Carter Middle School ATF Fed Reps Maddy Row and Luis DeVargas.

7th-grade science teacher Maddy Row is proud to serve as an elected ATF union representative at her school because of negative experiences at anti-union workplaces. “My background was in retail management,” she explained. While on the job, she received “active training on how to union bust and dissuade people from forming a union”—something she “absolutely abhorred.”

“Once I became an educator,” she says, “I was just really excited to join the union and help where I could because our job is political.”

6-8th grade orchestra teacher Luis DeVargas always wanted to be an educator. As soon as he entered the classroom in APS five years ago, he knew he wanted to take an active role in his union and run for Fed Rep. “From the very first day teaching and interacting with everyone,” he says, “I was convinced that teachers know best.”

“We are in the classroom every day, and we should be the ones driving the decisions that impact schools and the daily life of our students.”
