We don't always know what will come out in a conversation. And Yes, it is part of Unique's Coming Out journey!
We had a fascinating discussion on the podcast about a topic that affects nearly every family: screen time.
My guest, Unique Simmons, who founded the youth advocacy organization "For The People," shared some startling information. Research shows that screen-based addiction is rewiring children's cognitive development, with impacts seen in infants as young as 0-3 months. Her daughter hasn't had a cell phone for 19 months, and in that time has taught herself Japanese and learned multiple instruments.
This isn't about eliminating technology, but about fostering a healthier relationship with it to protect kids' developing brains and social skills.

One of the most important takeaways from our recent podcast episode of 3 Essential Questions was the value of creating a "safe space" for young people.
For the girls at Girls Inc of Santa Fe, this means having a place where they can navigate the tough transitions of adolescence without judgment.
Kim Brown shared how girls who have been in the program since they were five or six find a reliable community to lean on, especially during those challenging middle school years. It’s a space where they learn to build lasting friendships, handle conflict, and find their confidence, knowing they have a supportive network to catch them.

One of the most complex parts of a coming out journey can be navigating long-held family beliefs and personal faith. My guest, Doug, talked about growing up in a religious household where certain traditional values were deeply ingrained.

He described a slow process of questioning and eventually moving away from the rigid religious framework of his youth, which he found freeing. When it came to his family, he was understandably hesitant, especially after seeing a hurtful homophobic post from his father online.

However, with the help of his sister as a bridge, his parents moved from initial shock to acceptance. His dad even stands up for him now. It shows that while the initial reaction may be rooted in fear or lack of understanding, love can often pave the way for a profound shift in perspective.

A fascinating point from our recent conversation with Jonathan David Lewis of McKee Wallwork was about brand modernization. Consider a giant like Harley-Davidson. Their core customer base, the baby boomer generation, is aging. This creates a critical challenge: how do you evolve to attract younger generations without alienating the loyal following that built your brand?

This isn't just a Harley problem. Kodak, Meta, and even Google are facing similar generational shifts. It's a powerful reminder that no brand, no matter how iconic, is immune to the passage of time. The market is always changing, and identity has to shift with it or you will not remain relevant. This makes the work they are doing very important for your branding.

In my latest conversation on Lip Service, I spoke with Doctor Sun, who shared a profound perspective on identity. After undergoing cancer treatment that resulted in chemical castration, their relationship with sexuality shifted dramatically.

This led them to identify as Ace Ero (asexual/aromantic) and to embrace the concept of being "self-partnered." It's a powerful reminder that wholeness doesn't always come from being coupled. How much of our desire for partnership is truly our own, versus what is programmed by society? It's a question that has stayed with me.

Are press releases obsolete in the age of influencer marketing?

We asked this very question to my guest, Krystelle Siarza Moon, a communications expert with over a decade of experience.

Her answer provided a brilliant analogy. She compared public relations tactics to cars. The traditional press release is like the "gas-powered car"—still necessary for specific situations, like SEO or communicating factual information to certain outlets.

However, the industry now has its "electric cars," which include influencer marketing, content creators, and paid media. These newer frontiers have been gaining significant ground for the last six to seven years.
The key takeaway? A successful strategy requires knowing when to "go gas" and when to "go electric," depending on your goals and audience.

In our latest podcast episode, a fact shared by Dennis Plummer from Meals on Wheels New Mexico truly stopped me in my tracks: for every person experiencing homelessness in our state, 81 people are food insecure. This isn't just about hunger; it's about people watering down meals to make them last or relying on cheap, non-nutritious food. It was a powerful reminder that the struggle for basic nutrition is a widespread and often hidden crisis affecting our neighbors across New Mexico.

We had a great conversation with Michelle Mirabal about the "why" behind her event, Foxy Fest. Now in its third year, the festival was born from a desire to create an inclusive space that offers a healthy alternative to the traditional bar scene. Her vision was to build a celebratory atmosphere where sober individuals and families could feel just as welcome and engaged. Past events have included everything from fire dancers and paddleboarding to yoga and community grilling, all centered on mindful connection. It's a thoughtful approach to event planning that really prioritizes community well-being.

Thinking beyond traditional business models can unlock incredible growth. Imagine a local bike shop and a pet store teaming up. They could co-host a community 5K run/walk event, with proceeds benefiting a local animal shelter. The bike shop gains exposure to a health-conscious, community-minded audience, while the pet store connects with active pet owners. Both businesses position themselves as pillars of the community, attracting new customers who value their shared commitment. This type of creative partnership generates buzz, goodwill, and customer loyalty far more effectively than a standard ad campaign.
