Santa Fe's reputation as an art destination is well known, but during our chat with gallery owner Dale McDonald, we learned an interesting fact: Santa Fe has one of the highest concentrations of art galleries in the country, second only to New York City. This puts our region's art scene into a national perspective.
For emerging artists, it means that while there's immense competition, there is also a vast network of opportunities right here in New Mexico, from Santa Fe and Albuquerque to the dozens of galleries in the tiny, funky, and walkable town of Madrid.
Dale’s first rule? He has to personally find the work interesting, since his gallery is also his home. But beyond that, it's about taking calculated risks. He once took a chance on a series of small 4x4 acrylic squares he was unsure about. Four years later, he's sold about 100 of them. It's a great lesson in art curation: what resonates with a buyer is deeply personal, and sometimes the most unexpected pieces are the ones that find a home.
