The Street Food Institute is a non-profit organization of food service and business professionals dedicated to shaping a healthy, sustainable, and creative food future across New Mexico. We’re guided by our belief that food can connect people and enrich our community by creating jobs, developing local business opportunities, and inspiring tomorrow’s culinary leaders. We’re here to share, teach, and inspire students, future entrepreneurs, existing food operators, and the generous sponsors who support our vision.
Your support allows us to continue to offer paid internships to individuals who are interested in learning and gaining experience in the food industry as well as the opportunity to offer scholarships to our Entrepreneurial Management Course for those individuals who have a dream of launching or scaling their own food business.

The final round of recipe testing for our Spring 2026 class was a huge success! We can’t wait to share their hard work and creativity with the community at our graduation ceremony.
Each student will present their business concept and provide samples of their products, giving them the opportunity to receive direct feedback and connect with the community.
We are so excited to see what’s next for these incredible entrepreneurs!

Come grab something delicious from the SFI food truck and spend the day exploring an amazing lineup of local vendors. It’s the perfect way to support small businesses, connect with the community, and enjoy a great day out.

Mondays and Tuesdays are always a great time in the kitchen! Why? Because that’s when we host culinary students from RFK Charter School!
Check out their tasty creations! Each week, students explore new cuisines, learn hands-on cooking techniques, and build their confidence in the kitchen.
A huge thank you to Chef Jon for being such an inspiring leader and mentor!

Last week kicked off the first round of recipe testing for our Spring 2026 Entrepreneurial Food Management cohort!
We love seeing the Barelas Community Kitchen full of life and creativity. From already established businesses to those just beginning their food journey, this space brings together passion, innovation, and community.
It’s inspiring to watch each idea take shape and grow. We can’t wait to see what comes next!

Saturday morning marked our first Community Breakfast of the year, and it was a beautiful way to gather with our neighbors on the plaza.
Guests enjoyed a delicious breakfast, great company, and live music from Mariachi Sangre del Sol, who brought such a vibrant and joyful energy to the morning.
A heartfelt thank you to La Planta for generously providing free produce boxes to everyone who attended.
We’re so excited to continue creating spaces like this to connect, share, and celebrate together!

Last Friday marked our first community gathering of the year! Even though it was a bit windy and chilly, we had an amazing turnout with many familiar faces and some wonderful new ones.
Guests enjoyed a delicious spread of pizza, tacos, salad, and dessert. Truly something for everyone! A huge thank you to Planty Sweet for the vegan and gluten-free cupcakes, Desert Flower Pastries for the incredible red chile chocolate chip toffee cookies, and Da Mama’s Papas for the refreshing agua fresca.
We can’t wait to continue hosting these meaningful community gatherings throughout the year!

Today marks the 1-year anniversary of the Barelas Community Kitchen grand opening!
This past year has been an incredible journey, and we couldn’t be more proud to call this vibrant community space our home. From hosting meaningful community gatherings to welcoming three cohorts of entrepreneurs into our education space, it’s been amazing to see so much growth and connection.
Our shared kitchen is bustling with activity, filled with passionate food entrepreneurs bringing their ideas to life. Along the way, we’ve made so many new friends and strengthened our community in ways we could have only imagined.
We’re so grateful for everyone who has been part of this journey and we can’t wait to see what’s next.

We’re excited to share our First Quarter 2026 Newsletter! Take a few moments to read through and catch up on all the amazing things happening at SFI.
One highlight we’re especially proud of is the upcoming launch of our small food market in the heart of Barelas. This market will increase access to fresh, healthy food options while creating new opportunities for local food entrepreneurs to showcase and sell their products. In partnership with Together for Brothers, we’ll also be offering a bike delivery program—making it easier for community members to access affordable, nutritious food right from their neighborhood.
