Today, two incredible Search and Rescue responders deserve a standing ovation for their exceptional work in the field!

At 3:00 a.m., Tayo Basquiat of Cibola SAR and Albuquerque Mountain Rescue Council, and Tyler Mobraten of Socorro SAR, answered the call to find a missing 69-year-old hiker on Mount Taylor.

Using their tracking skills and sound sweeps, they located the hiker on a remote ridge. Both EMTs, they assessed his condition, took his vital signs, and began warming and rehydrating him.

After more than three hours of navigating rugged terrain, they guided him several miles to a waiting UTV, where he was transported to an ambulance and then airlifted to the hospital.

Perhaps the most moving part of this mission? The hiker feared he wouldn’t survive the night and had begun writing messages to his family when Tayo and Tyler emerged from the darkness.

Outstanding work, Tayo and Tyler! Your skill, perseverance, and compassion brought hope when it was needed most.

On Friday, NMSAR was dispatched alongside other local agencies for a person who crashed their ATV and could not be located in the Rio Puerco. These are drone shots taken by one of our members.

Before heading out, it’s always important to tell someone where you’re going, your planned route, and when you expect to return. Also, don’t rely solely on your cell phone for navigation or emergencies.

Back in August, the 58th Special Operations Wing briefed New Mexico Search and Rescue on their rescue and medical capabilities and how they can support critical civilian missions.

July 16, 2022 is a date that forever changed the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, Bernalillo County Fire Rescue, and the families, friends, coworkers, and community who loved them.

Today, we remember not only how they died, but how they lived. Their service, their laughter, their leadership, their friendships, and the impact they left behind still carry through the people who knew them and the agencies they helped shape.

To their families, we continue to stand with you.

To our brothers and sisters at Bernalillo County Fire Rescue, we remember with you.

And to Larry, Fred, Michael, and Matthew, your names, your service, and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.
