We move within the mainstream of progressive Christianity as we follow the teachings of Jesus. When asked what was the greatest commandment in the law, Jesus replied:

‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. This is the simple declaration of what MCC believes:

“Christianity is the revelation of God in Jesus Christ and is the religion set forth in the scriptures. Jesus Christ is foretold in the Old Testament, presented in the New Testament, and proclaimed by the Christian Church in every age and in every land.”

Our thoughts affect our feelings and behavior. God wants us delivering the message of love at every turn- messages to others, and messages to ourselves. We can do this!

Sometimes it’s tempting to skate through life. Maybe we achieved some level of success or fulfillment and we just want to rest on our laurels. But God does not call us to a place of complacency; instead we are urged to keep going, keep striving and improving. Not because God wants us to do better, but because we can do better if we want to. Today we hear a word of encouragement to forget the past and instead strain forward to what lies ahead, to press on toward the goal of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus

There is a saying, “A team is a group of people who have committed themselves to a common goal”. That goal could be getting a ball over a line more times than the other team. Or, it could be a church—like ours—that has decided to be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.” We are not called to think and act alike, but we are called to humble ourselves, like Jesus did, and work together for God’s good pleasure. Today we hear an admonishment to “Let the same mind be in us that was in Christ Jesus,” and we will explore how to do that.

It would be a lot easier to discern one’s calling if God would just lay it out plainly and clearly. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. These days we don’t hear God as a spoken voice, instead it more often comes as a still small voice in the mind’s ear. We must piece together this inner knowing, discern it’s source and then take those tentative first steps. Today we learn about a young man named Samuel who went through this process and we will apply it to our
work as a Faith Community.
