When the TRIBES Project started in 2021, Dr. Maria Yellow Horse Brave Heart was the Primary Investigator. The impetus for the TRIBES Project was her HTUG framework and model, along with numerous projects she was part of during her nearly 40 year career.

Dr. Brave Heart has since retired, and our TRIBES Project has continued to advance the work that was started to continue her legacy in transcending trauma for our relatives.

She was recently honored by the American Psychological Association- Division 35 with the Sweetgrass Award. Here is what they shared about Dr. Brave Heart:

“Dr. Maria Yellow Horse Brave Heart’s enduring legacy lies in her groundbreaking work on historical trauma and its lasting impact on Indigenous communities, transforming how mental health professionals understand intergenerational grief and resilience. Through her development of the Historical Trauma and Unresolved Grief Treatment model, she created culturally grounded pathways for healing that are now widely used across Indigenous and other marginalized populations globally. Her scholarship, mentorship, and direct community engagement helped move historical trauma from a contested idea to an established framework in behavioral health fields. Ultimately, her work continues to shape practice, research, and policy worldwide by centering resilience, cultural strength, and collective healing.”

We are so proud of her accomplishments and continue to be humbled to advance her work and legacy through our TRIBES Project! ✨🎉👏🪶

🖤❤️💛🤍

Thank you APA, Division 35, Sec6 and Society of Indian Psychologists for recognizing Dr. Brave Heart’s contributions!
