NMRC racing family—one of our own needs our support. ❤️

Nineteen-year-old Owen Murphy was seriously injured during Saturday’s pre-ride at the Gordy Hicks Hare Scrambles in Socorro and was airlifted to Albuquerque. We are deeply grateful to everyone who stopped to help and to the Socorro EMT team for getting Owen the urgent care he needed.

Owen faces a long recovery, but he’s already looking ahead to riding his brand-new KX250 again. His family has organized a GoFundMe to help with medical expenses and the financial challenges ahead.

Please give what you can and share the fundraiser to help it reach others. Every donation, share, and message of encouragement matters. Let’s show Owen and his family that their NMRC racing family is behind them

From the Family:
Owen Murphy was critically injured during Gordie’s Race in Socorro, New Mexico, after a dirt bike accident that left him unable to feel his legs and in need of urgent medical care. His family is working hard to support him through this long recovery, but they need our help to cover medical expenses, ongoing living costs, and his remaining motorcycle balance.

Every donation can make a real difference in easing the financial burden during this challenging time. Please consider sharing or contributing if you can—your support means the world to Owen and his family. DM me if you have questions or want to offer encouragement. 🙏🏍️

Gordy Hicks Hare Scrambles
Important Pre-Race Notes and Directions

Twenty miles of desert racing, a hillclimb showdown, and a weekend of Halloween fun—Socorro is calling! We invite you to settle in our new staging area with your family and race crew and join the New Mexico Race Collective and the Roadrunners for the Gordy Hicks Hare Scrambles, October 17–18, 2026, at the Johnson (Gordy’s) Hills OHV Area in Socorro, New Mexico.

Directions to race site: https://maps.app.goo.gl/o5GcdePMP5JLzffMA

Racers take NOTE: If you just goggle Gordys OHV area, you might get directed to the new 4 Wheeler staging area off the Quebradas Road. This is the wrong staging.

We’re celebrating a living legend, Gordy Hicks, with an old-school race course packed with sand washes, singletrack, and two-track that will keep you smiling—and working for that finish! A 4 laps, B 3 laps, C 2 laps, Beg/Mini 1 lap.

Pre-entry is open now at www.nmracecollective.com. Get signed up, gather your riding crew, and make plans to spend the weekend with your racing family.

Saturday, October 17, is packed with reasons to arrive early:

11 AM–12:30 PM: Course pre-ride. Explore the course for $30. Open to all riders, whether you’re racing or not; no AMA required for the pre-ride.

12 PM: Free Youth/Women Beginner training. Pre-ride the youth courses and pick up tips from NMRC pros Jude and Justin Vigil!

2 PM: Youth and Women Beginner races. Cheer on the 50cc, 65cc, and 85cc racers, plus Women Beginner Mini and Open classes.

4 PM: Gordy Hicks Hillclimb Challenge. Take your shot at becoming King of the Hill!

5:30 PM Youth/Hillclimb trophies, NM Rattlers MC trophy presentation

7 PM Pit Decorating Contest, Trick or Treating, Kids Costume Contest

Think you’ve got the fastest climb? Bring your bike and chase the $100 cash prize and bragging rights on Gordy’s famous hill! The hillclimb is open to any age rider and any cc bike—no paddle tires. Entry is just $10, with registration at sign-up. No Hare Scrambles race entry or AMA membership is required to enter the hillclimb.

Keep the action going Saturday evening with the NM Rattlers trophy presentation, pit decorating, and trick-or-treating! Get in on the fun and great prizes by dressing up your camp for the Best Pit!! Saturday evening is the kiddo Costume Contest, hand out treats, and vote for your favorite youngster and Pit decorations. Adults should pack your costume, too—Sundays Adult Costume Contest (for both racers and pit crew) gives everyone another chance to take home awesome prizes.

Then, on Sunday, October 18, it’s time to race! With classes from Pro through Beginner, this is your chance to enjoy a classic New Mexico desert course and help keep the Gordy Hicks racing tradition rolling.

Sign Up will be available onsite for an additional $20 fee. Sign Up hours Friday 5 pm - 8 pm Saturday 8 am - 1 pm, Sunday 7 am to 8 am. All racers must check in at sign up with their helmet, have tech inspection and their race number clearly visible on their front number plate.

Note to our racers: This event is on BLM land and all federal laws apply. The Socorro BLM enforcement has stressed that law enforcement will be out at this event and looking to correct (and give tickets to) individuals violate these laws: 1) Do NOT Ride in any of the designated WSA (Wilderness Study Area) that are marked as such. The NMRC will have extra signs clearly indicating any boundaries that might be near our race site. 2) No one under the age of 16 can ride ANY type of off road vehicle without a helmet, no exceptions. The BLM has made it clear that anyone in violation will be ticketed. 3) Absolutely NO drinking alcohol and driving ANY type of off road vehicle, especially SXS. If you are spotted drinking any alcohol and driving you will be ticketed with a DWI. The Socorro law enforcement division is pretty clear that these are the area of concern for their team, and the NMRC has assured them that we will back up them up with race penalty/consequences if anyone in our community is in violation. The Socorro BLM office is a respected member of our collective and proud supporter of the Gordy Hicks Hare Scrambles!

Save $$ and Pre-enter today, bring the family, and come ready to race, climb, and celebrate!

See you in Socorro!

The crew is so happy to let our racers know that we have a new staging area for the Gordy Hicks Hare Scrambles. No more camping in the arroyo!! The new area is on the left side across the arroyo from the Sand Hills. Although we are still breaking it in, there is plenty of room for rigs and campers! The course is laid out and NEW - kinda backward from last year and FUN. Approx 20 miles. Big thanks go out to the Denny and the Socorro BLM for working out the new staging, all our fellow NMRC friends for ribboning. See you all next weekend!!
