Special Request for short testimonials supporting Public Land.
This effort by our friends at New Mexico Wild deserves front page posting and our quick responses to preserve Public Lands.
Read this request below and please share your personal picture and heartfelt testimonials with Bjorn.

AWC Pres

"I don’t know if you’ve been following the recent energy around public lands seizure/transfer efforts, though this heated up in later 2024 with state of Utah filing a petition with the Supreme Court requesting that they bypass the lower courts and take up a case in which UT hoped to have at least a large portion of the lands managed by the BLM deemed unconstitutional, thereby requiring their transfer to states and/or private parties. Fortunately this petition failed but more recent rule changes in Congress have also make the transfer of federal lands easier. Long story short, it appears with this Congress and administration that we will see additional, credible efforts to transfer public lands out of federal management. If this comes to pass we could see far reaching consequences, including a loss of recreation access.

One of our strategies at New Mexico Wild to combat this challenge is collecting testimonials on the importance of public lands from a wide array of interests to use to raise public awareness on this issue, for use in a variety of communications contexts – our newsletter, social media, press releases, etc.

Would you be willing to help me out with this project, whether by providing a testimonial as a boater on why public lands matter or helping me connect with someone in the boating community who’d be willing? We’re looking for something in the ballpark of 50 words, so a couple of sentences, plus a photo of the person providing the testimonial, with permission to use both as needed.

Many thanks for your consideration and please let me know if you have any follow-up questions."

Corrales Siphon Reconstruction.
The historic wooden cribbing of the siphon that carried ditch water under the Rio Grande collapsed and two massive pumps have been used to supply water to the west side Corrales ditch as a temporary fix. The permanent MRGCD repair will require a tunnel bored under the riverbed. US Bureau of Reclamation will also complete an extensive reshaping of the eroded riverbed and banks immediately below the siphon feature. With these two projects staging in the same area, we can expect major access issues at this popular river access location for the next two years. Takeouts may need to be at the North Beach access just upstream requiring a longer, uphill carry out. (Turn off Riverside Dr near the Rio Vista Park). Put-in options are very limited in Corrales, but we will post any feasible locations as discovered. Work will not begin before Balloon Fiesta, but the current minimal flows now prevent most paddlers from considering this reach anyway.

Alameda Diversion status.
The high flows of this past spring have left the Water Users inflatable diversion dam inoperable.
That federally protected facility still demands that the fish bypass channel is not to be used to float around the dam, and there has never been any feasible portage option.
Maybe this need for safe boater passage will finally be addressed during immediate repairs.
Recommendations are to launch at the Calabacillas Arroyo access point just downstream on the west bank.

El Vado Dam Reconstruction.
We hope to get more detailed information from USBR on the scope and schedule of the major rework at this failing dam, but it will take many years to find a solution.
El Vado Reservoir is basically drained, forcing any water storage for recreational release to be at Heron Lake. The Rio Chama is a premier destination for boaters in the permitted Wilderness section and the exciting Chama Daily section.

Bureau of Land Management held a Recreation Summit on Sep 5 here in Albuquerque with nearly 50 Partner Organizations to focus on Recreation Opportunities and Challenges.
National representatives were here to gather and share information to improve Outdoor Recreation in New Mexico.

Stay active and connected!

Playing catch-up with news from the Rio Rangers youth program! We had an amazing weekend (if rather windy at times) with our crew, paddling the Bernalillo to Corrales section on Saturday, camping out at Coronado Campground, then running Algodones on a beautiful Sunday. 🛶

Thank you to the whole team (parents, safety boaters, instructors, sponsors) who made this weekend a memorable one! From s'mores, games, and camp meals, to ferrying, surfing, and a pickup game of soccer/polo/keep-away, it really was a trip to remember 🥰

We have had the most incredible time with this inspiring cohort of youth with our inaugural Rio Rangers youth program! From pool practice to lake and river paddles, to learning in community from club instructors and scientists alike, these students have grown so much in both paddling skills and as conscious stewards and recreators in the outdoors.

Many thanks again to our sponsors at NM Outdoor Recreation Division for supporting this effort, and we look forward to providing more great outdoor youth equity offerings to come!
